Chronic nausea

Posted by jillannw @jillannw, Dec 25, 2018

I started 8 months ago with either food poisoning or a stomach flu. I have never recovered. I have had every test done and continue to suffer from nausea everyday. In the middle of this I was diagnosed with and treated for c-diff twice but because I didn’t have the classic symptoms the drs at Mayo thought they were false positives. I also was diagnosed and treated for SIBO twice. The nausea everyday which is where this all started never went away. Has anyone had this and come up with a solution?

My mom is now 84 and has been experiencing chronic nausea for 6 yrs that use to be seasonal in Alabama (Feb - Oct), but now year round. She has recently started taking Imipromene to reduce the sensitivity of the gut which takes several weeks to start working, but about the time it seemed to be working she had a bad UTI and of course a round of antibiotics. Her nausea during the UTI and antibiotics was high level and around the clock coupled with anxiety and lack of sleep. She is taking Nexium and now Phenergen (vs Reglan which stopped working after 2 months). Her gut seems more sensitive so we are trying to give her foods with probiotics and prebiotics to build the healthy bacteria again. Phenergan is helping her sleep at night better, but unstable due to dizziness. We are not sure what to do and her gastroenterologist seems puzzled. We are also going to try the ReliefBand and praying that works for her! Any suggestions of a great doctor in Alabama or near?

I understand your issue with chronic nausea and dizziness. I have finally found relief.
A little back ground: I am an 84 year old female...weight 133 pounds.
In October, 2017 I had colon surgery (Colectomy) ...6 inches of sigmoid colon removed due to Diverticulitis. After that I suffered with bouts of constipation and diarrhea. The worst symptom was Chronic Nausea and Dizziness...I mostly just sat and watched TV.
I saw several doctors and took medications...nothing worked until I saw a new gastroenterologist.
After a couple of trials He prescribed NORTRIPTYLINE 25MG, 1 capsule nightly. He also prescribed ODANSETROM 4 MG if needed. Like magic the nausea improved. I began these meds July, 2022. Only twice have I felt a need to take the ODANSETRON.
About the same time I started taking BRAGG'S APPLE CIDER VINEGAR (2 TBSP) with raw, unfiltered honey ( about 1 tsp or to taste, in a glass of water. God Bless you and I hope this helps.

Has she thought about seeing a gastro naturopath or functional dr? They get to the root cause.

I have horrendous chronic digestive Disorders 10 yrs now . 6 diagnoses, 6 Gastro Drs . Over 20 tests in that time . Been to Mayo Clinic too . Seeing FM Dr now . Tried everything, RX , diet wise , supplements, nothing , not one thing helps me .
I deep wet belch over 1000 x a day / night . Non stop 🛑 churning gut , chronic gastritis, GERD , diverticulosis, small hiatal hernia , IBS- D , nausea, it goes on and on .
It really has ruined my life and I’m only 61 .
I don’t even want to see another Dr. , I’m a medical mystery to them. It’s really enough to make a person feel crazy. I feel for your Mom .

Well I was having nausea for 4 years on and off daily. Went on vacation and felt great. Ate and drank everything on a cruise for nearly 3 weeks. Came home and nausea returned after 1 week. Eating bland now but no help still nausea. Any ideas besides going on vacation again?? LOL Thanks.

HI !
Someone else posted about how their heartburn went away on vacation, and they got a lot of responses. Maybe you could read the responses there? Might be helpful?

This was my idea to that other person. Maybe it's not "what" you eat, but "how" you eat?
I used to eat fast and poorly at my desk very often. It gave me digestive problems (heartburn, gas, nausea, etc.).
Just an idea. Hope it helps.

I used to have a period when I would have nausea for several days or so if not weeks but it would go away for a time. Now I have low level nausea that remains constant and has not gone away for at least 2 months. Doesn't matter what I eat or don't. Raise my head when sleep or not. Any ideas what to do? Thanks.

That must be very uncomfortable. Have you been evaluated by your primary or gastroenterologist? It could be many different things. My mom has recurring nausea everyday, but it resolves if she takes a pill for anxiety. Have any medications helped?

I went through a long period when I felt like this but I also would occasionally vomit. I believe in the end it was caused by acid reflux but I widely refuted that when I was told. I never had any symptoms of heartburn. I couldn't believe that it could cause such awful symptoms. I ended up going through 2-3 cycles of the OTC acid lowering drugs; each one is for two weeks. I also was given sucralfate and that was like a miracle drug. My GI said it's like a band-aid for the stomach. It started working almost immediately, first by just diminishing the intensity of the nausea and stomach upset. But all told it took quite a bit of time to completely go away. You might also ask about small bowel bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). That can present with similar symptoms. A big frustration with stomach acid or bile acid reflux is the time it takes to reduce the acid. I take Tums now from time to time because that is fast acting and even gas-x. I've suffered with my stomach and gut and so I really appreciate how awful this must be for you. Have you seen a GI for your issues?

I'm not sure on this but could be a hiatal hernia

Nausea could be caused by different conditions. Suggest that you find a good Gastro doctor. I had problems with gallbladder in 2021 that caused Nausea and pain.
