Losing a photographic memory

Ever since I was a youth I had a photographic memory I could remember just about a written sentence in the books I knew by heart, my past I kept special but I came down with long Covid and that brain fog was like a memory whipe and it’s completely gone.

I dont know if it will be helpful but I took NAC following covid. My cousin suggested it for loss of smell. It worked for that. You can get it over the counter or health food store. I have heard there is a prescription version in other countries that works well for long Covid. I guess the benefits with the prescription one work even better but the health store version brought back my sense of smell pretty quickly. Its better than before I had covid.

Mine was an excellent working memory as in remembering say 12 very different unique tasks to be done that day…now I can leave the room and forget why! I also have trouble with everyday words and can’t do the simplest of sums in my head. Long term memory is fine; and I still able to remember information by where it is sited in my handwritten notes ( old school). One thing I find particularly difficult to do now is read scientific papers as I cannot cope with the likes of acronyms or abbreviations… I took Augmented NAC 2-3 years ago( amongst other supplements)… it did nothing for brain, nor my lost sense of smell.

It is primarily Brain Fog that got me awarded Federal SSDI in early January this year. I'm a career bookkeeper. Over the 5 years (since 9/2020) I've had LC, I've cost me and my husband $1000's in bookkeeping errors in our businesses. Just a couple months ago I discovered I had failed to pay our property taxes. For an ENTIRE YEAR! Can't do any math calculations in my head. I can hardly figure anything out on paper. I had a friend watching me with concern and wondering as I stood at the register for quite a long time after a meal. I couldn't add the tip to the total.

I'm also an extremely visual person. See the words I'm saying - when I can remember the ones I want to say - running across my mind like a ticker tape. Short term memory has completely failed me. Can only remember 3 numbers or, on a good day, sets of numbers at a time if you're telling me a phone or account number... I do remember taking a college biology exam. I came to a question that I KNEW exactly where it was answered on which page of the text, but couldn't "read" the answer. I can't remember (ha!) if I got the answer right on the exam, but after the exam I pulled out the text and went directly to the page and paragraph I KNEW where it was! I understand exactly what you're talking about.

I take NAC, but not sure if I'm experiencing any improvement. Still no focus. Takes me literal hours to cognitively read articles of any length. Novels are better, but anything technical is a lost cause.

Blessings to us all for proper treatments to bring us back to ourselves.

Oh my golly! I thought I was the only one with memory issues. I used to read up to five books at a time, but now—after having Covid in 2021, I cannot read more than one book at a time. I am now listening to audio books because I get so frustrated. It is so disheartening to have my life totally upended. Brain fog, shortness of breath, I used to handle some slightly spicy foods—not anymore. I even have lymphadema, and neuropathy in my feet. No known cause as to why I developed lymphadema nor the neuropathy. My life is not mine, any longer.

Susan, suefish here. Hope I have the right address. I’m having many of your above-mentioned issues. Can hardly read, major brain fog and shortness of breath, and many more. People don’t seem to understand and they often (wrongly) assume that I’m getting dementia. Grrrr

@moecavicchi I have had a lot of success with NAC. I don’t take it consistently, but I have had short periods of time (2-4 days) where I take 600-1200 mg a day, and it has been hugely helpful for cognitive function and overall energy and PEM reduction. I have to be careful not to take it late in the day, because it makes me energized and awake. I use the Thorne brand, which is very reputable. NAC is the precursor molecule for glutathione, which is our body’s natural antioxidant. I have had benefits in my gut health from taking it as well as just feeling so much better. Makes me think that some of my issues are due to oxidative stress.
