Looking for recovery group for aethiests

Posted by akauffman @akauffman, Sep 2 10:55pm

Im in my tenth year of recovery from alcohol, pot and pills. My recovery is going strong but id love to find a community for support and too whom I can offer support. I know the twelve step program says you didn't have to believe in god and I've been to many meetings over the years. Unfortunately I do not believe in any higher power and have always felt that faith is the expected underlying step that holds that program together.

Id love to hear ideas/insight/experiences of anyone else who understands this conundrum. Thanks!

Hi akaufman,
I use the power of my home group for my step 2. The collective minds I find there are certainly much smarter than I am!!
You've been to meetings and I know at some NA conventions the topic of recovery for athiests and agnostics has been discussed. I never attended the convention so can not help you but you may find it in a search of AA or NA websites.
You certainly can find recovery without God as your higher power but your recovery will be limited.

Thanks for the reply! The conventions are great and they certainly helped in my early recovery.

Thankfully, not having god as a higher power had not limited the beauty of my ten year recovery!

I'm not sure where you are located but in Eau Claire, WI there's a place called The Wellness Shack and it has recovery groups that are peer-lead groups. They typically do not focus on a "higher power". Hope this helps!
