Looking for hemorrhoid/rectal specialist or help for my husband
Good day,
My husband is dealing with reoccurring internal, external and marginal hemorrhoids for the last 2 years. The hemorrhoids do not / have never cause any bleeding and are around stage 2-3. He is on a high fiber diet and no long has issues going to the bathroom, but his hemorrhoids continue to reoccur. He is also dealing with strange rectal inflammation / bulging that was told was not rectal prolapse that happens in the evening and is not related to going to the bathroom. He has been to numerous colorectal doctors and other doctors that are generally very dismissive or told ‘I don’t know.’ He is also experiencing constant rectal and pelvic pain and discomfort that does not relent and gets worse when lying down. He has been going to pelvic floor therapy for over a year with little improvement. Also, trying to rule out pelvic nerve issues, pelvic congestion syndrome and IBD but every test is inconclusive. Colorectal won’t preform surgery because they don’t think the pain / discomfort is from hemorrhoids, but don’t have any other suggestions. At this point we don’t know what to do anymore or what to try next. I’m trying to find a colorectal who specializes in abnormal rectal issues or who is also proficient with pelvic floor dysfunction on Long Island or NYC, but I can’t find anyone specific. Any help would be appreciated, thank you and happy holidays

Has he been evaluated for this condition? I have had it intermittently for many years. It’s not caused by hemorrhoids, but at times it’s difficult to tell.

2 ReactionsI too thought it was pelvic floor contraction because his symptoms sounded like what I had, it’s so misleading because the pain is more in the rectal area and sometimes in the pelvic region. I was given a drug called Amitriptyline which is actually an older antidepressant, I started on 5 mg. for one week and then 10 mg., it took all the pain away, it’s curious to me how this drug did stop the pain but I’m very happy it did. I think that it might be worth trying this medication or something similar and see if it works for him, I sincerely hope he gets relief because chronic pain is definitely awful, best wishes.

Thank you for the message. He has not been evaluated for that condition, but I have been reading about it myself. One of his doctors has suggested he may have levator ani syndrome though

Thank you so much for the message and best wishes. He actually just started that medication bit ago and recently increased to 10 mg. I am hoping it helps because I have read that it has helped others as well. I’m happy to hear it worked well for you and I agree chronic pain is awful and I hate seeing him like this.

4 Reactions@leerose I noticed that you mentioned levator ani syndrome and this was exactly what I was diagnosed with, it’s contractions in the pelvic floor muscles, there’s lots of exercises to help strengthen the muscles but I am keeping my fingers crossed that he responds to the medication, best wishes.

2 ReactionsHas anyone been to Cleveland Clinic for gastroparisis? If so, were you satisfied with your experience? What was the treatment and did it work?
I don’t know if this will help but you can do a search for a rectal surgeon here:
