Long Covid+Dysautonomia compression garments

Posted by awsf @awsf, Jan 7 11:38am

I'm struggling to find comfortable compression garments. I was told to wear abdominal binder and compression socks. No problem with the socks but wearing the binder every day isn't working for me.
They don't fit well under or over clothes and if I'm sitting it gets very uncomfortable. I've read that leggings are working for some people but I haven't found any recommendations on brands. I've tried shapermint, they're comfortable but I don't think they have enough compression. Ive spent hrs on the internet looking up high waisted compression leggings .Has anyone out there found a good brand?

Hello @awsf, My only experience has been trying to find Spanx men's underwear following double inguinal hernia surgery to support the abdominal muscles. @nanimann and @julbpat may have some suggestions of brands for abdominal compression garments. I have lymphedema and also wear below the knee compression socks. I found that I really like ones with zippers that are extremely easy to put on and take off. I order them on Amazon but they may be available in medical stores also - https://www.amazon.com/TheraMagicTM-Compression-20-30mmHg-Graduated-Zippered/dp/B0BG7GY8VN.

I see that John mentioned my name for possible help. Interestingly, just reading about compression makes me recoil a bit. The thought of something squeezing my mid-section sounds unbearable! This winter I’ve noticed that, although I love warm feet, I can only wear socks with my shoes for a short while. I wore thin socks with boots yesterday. After a few hours, they were sending me all sorts of irritating signals, and I had to take them off and switch to fuzzy socks with slippers. So I guess I’m no help with finding compression garments.

Sorry for the tag @julbpat. I saw that @nanimann had asked the same question in your discussion on Dysautonomia: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/dysautonomia/ and thought you might have some experience so tagged you both.

Not a problem. I did buy compression socks for a while, especially the style with no toes. Answering this question made me acknowledge that my SFN is traveling up my legs. I have tons of socks that I haven’t worn this winter. I’ve been wearing Skechers and Bzees shoes/ booties that have a soft inner lining, and don’t require socks.
Of course, I’m in Alabama, where I can get away with this. But today it’s 28 degrees, and we’ve had about 10 snowflakes, so I would have to give in and wear them today. But I’ve begun to find the sensation irritating.

Thanks John for tagging me and organizing our conversations. Unfortunately, I too have not been able to wear the abdominal binder. Mine had velcro closure and was too difficult to fasten tightly around, and too uncomfortable to wear. If I were to try again, I would get one that has a "hook and loop closure" rather than velcro.

Regarding socks, I buy the Jobst brand. The highest compression is very difficult to put on, but works wonders. If you do buy its full length (waist to foot) compression garment< i'd recommend trying ones that are toeless (for long term comfort).

Hi all
Thanks for replying! Since writing. I have gotten Jobst toeless tights. They work and yup hard to put on
I also got a pair of compression Z leggings. They have more compression than others I've tried and aren't itchy. The fabric is that spandex type athletic wear. Not what id usually wear but they seem to help. They sell them on Amazon
I've added compression knee high socks under them for some extra support.

I've tried the Flex Seamless Compression Legging from Third Love recently (they're on sale right now for $25!! from $60). They're true to size, easy to get on and strangely, actually feel good on. I usually keep my pants unbuttoned or wear loose sweats and was very dubious that I could even wear compression leggings. The reviews on this pair led me to try them.

Oh thanks for the suggestion! I'm going to look that up right now
