Liver nerve block and cyst drain

Posted by blbird33 @blbird33, Jan 27, 2023

I had my kidney transplant 10/23/22 and one month after surgery I started to get liver pain and an enlarged liver. I have been suffering for 2 months as the docs take tests and try to figure out what to do and if it is the liver for sure. Most of the pain comes when sitting or bending forward and I tend to sit more than stand or walk. They are considering doing a nerve block on the right side, and then a liver cyst drain. Has anyone had a liver cyst drain, what questions should I ask about both of the procedures, what risks are there? Should I ask for pain pills and be admitted to the hospital after the procedure just to make sure I can take care of myself, as I live alone? Thank you, BB

Hello @blbird33. I'm wondering if your doctor shared anything about what to expect post procedure? From what I could find, it looks like it is typical to administer a local anesthetic so you don't feel anything, and then will be awake during the procedure. Does this sound like what you were told?

Yes, this is what I was told so far. I have not been told much about the liver cyst drain. I fear that I will be in more pain after the drain if needed. Thank you for your response. BB

I hope that the cyst drain provides some relief. When will you have the procedure? Have you expressed your concerns to the surgeon?

Rosemary, thank you for your response. I am just pulling together a list of my concerns for the surgeon for a call with her tomorrow. Do you have any suggested questions both for the nerve block and the liver cyst drain to ask her? I think doing both in a few days will be too much for me. I was told to take one procedure at a time. I was also told by someone that when a liver cyst bursts, it is very painful and that I would have to go to the hospital for pain relief, so fearful of more pain. I am asking to stay overnight if I am in too much pain from the procedure(s). I find that I forget what I want to say when faced with 2-3 doctors. I want to think of the questions before I face the docs. Thank you again, BB

BB, You are doing exactly what I would have suggested by making a list of questions and concerns.
-I think the first thing I would do is ask the surgeon to tell me about the procedure, and what to expect for the recovery.
-I think you should share your concerns about pain and ask about how/what will be provided for pain control.
-Ask if l she be scheduling a follow-up post operative appointment. And be sure to get a phone number to contact someone (not leave a message) when you return home.
-Is there an option doing them at the same time, or spacing them out as you have mentioned? If there is an option, get the pros and cons of each option.

I have no experience with these 2 procedures, and I hope that this meeting with the surgeon, who is the expert, will bring you some comfort and peace as you proceed forward with these needed surgical procedures. Please know that I will be thinking about you.
Will you let me know when the surgery is scheduled?
