Liver cancer stage 4

Posted by tara62 @tara62, Aug 3 2:17pm

My son was just diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer. The cancer has spread to his spleen and lungs, and he is in a lot of pain. I am very concerned about his prognosis, and I want him to get the best care possible. That's why I am reaching out to Mayo Clinic. I know that Mayo has a world-class cancer center, and I believe that my son would get the best possible treatment there. Unfortunately, we were told that he needs to be referred by an oncologist. The closest appointment available is the end of next week, and I don't think my son can wait that long. Is there any way to expedite his admission to Mayo? I'm desperate, and I'm willing to try anything. Please, if anyone has any suggestions or knows how I can get my son seen sooner, please let me know. Thank you!

Does your son an oncologist at time? If diagnosed I presume he does. Maybe you should speak with his doctors nurse and explain you just need referral to Mayo, not really an appointment. So sorry to hear of his cancer and the pain

We need to go to Mayo ASAP. My question is can we go without referral and appointment? Should we go to ER in Rochester so they take him in and start the treatment?

May I ask who diagnosed his condition. My oncologist leads what treatment I need. He/she would determine what to do. I would not recommend going to ER for liver cancer treatment. Your oncologist should be advised of serious pain issues so they can provide pain management.

Hi @stevie17! When from ER they send him to the hospital they did the CT scan and MRT, diagnosed him. At hospital the oncologist (to whom the hospital sent him after the discharge) came and talk to him, gave him very bad prognoses. My son has to wait one week to see this oncologist, when we asked for earlier appointment, he said they're busy. I'm Very disappointed, these people have no heart! My son needs to get a treatment now!
I really want him to go to Mayo for the treatment and don't know what to do. I don't trust these heartless doctors here....

@tara62, I hope you were able to contact Mayo Clinic. You can self-refer on behalf of your son, but getting a referral from his oncologist is helpful. I believe he may have had his appointment already. How is he doing?
