Linx procedure for severe GERD, Is it beneficial?
Hi everyone! I hope everyone is feeling well. I've posted once before regarding Botox injections to the Pyloric Sphincter. Today I would like to hear from those that have either heard about or have had the Linx procedure for severe GERD. I'm going to raise the topic at my next appointment with my GI specialist. When I went in to get the Botox injections about a month and a half ago my GI specialist stated that my GERD was severe and that she could visually see the acid/reflux free flowing back up into my esophagus, like it was something she stated she hasn't seen very often. Since being diagnosed with GP and Vagus Nerve Dysfunction my GERD has become a nightmare! Currently I take Zantac syrup twice daily and Prevacid ODT twice daily and these medications just aren't helping anymore. I have to sleep upright in a recliner to sleep and am unable to lay next to my husband in bed because if I do he is waking me up because I'm literally choking on the reflux. I avoid the foods and drinks I'm suppose to and I quit smoking. Does anyone know if the Linx procedure is minimally invasive or a noninvasive procedure? I thought maybe it could be done by endoscopy. Any ideas, information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your responses!

1 ReactionNF stands for Nissen Funduplication surgery for acid reflux. I have never heard of achalasia type 111 but if I were you, I would be asking a whole lot of questions about the procedure that you are considering having done. All procedures have risks and in my case and may others like me that had the NF done, are suffering more than ever did before. I look briefly into the procedure that you are thinking of and it looks like it is new and doesn't last. It would have to be redone and there are several complications. If you have Face Book, look for groups that are specific to achalasia. I'm sure that there is one. That is where I have found a lot of support and answers to many question to my condition. Best of luck to you!
Will pray for helpful results, Rosemary. 🙂 Suzanne

1 ReactionGreat advice. I’m going to follow it. Thank you very much. God bless you 🙏🏻
Thank you for responding. From what I read on all procedures for all three achalasia types; all of them have pitfalls. I'm definitely going to be asking a lot of questions. After waiting already for so long; I don't want to have to do more suffering than I already have been. This condition is debilitating; quality of life isn't good. It's been a wakeup call for sure. I guess not everything can be fixed 100% I am on FB. I will see if there is a group on the subject. Thank you.
I highly recommend the Linx procedure for anyone that has serious acid reflux or gerd. At least it can be reversed if it doesn't work for you. Acid reflux can lead to more serious health problems if not taken care of. Doctors at the Mayo Clinic think that reflux contributed to my husband's pulmonary fibrosis. The acid aspirates into the lungs and causes permanent damage. So, if you have acid reflux, please get it taken care of.

Rosemary,
I hope you find answers you need on your visit.
I was at Mayo Jax a couple of weeks ago. My team got changed. I needed my esophagus dilated again. Solid foods would not go down and liquids were beginning not to.
My new team is Jane Diamond NP and Dr Wolfsen. I only saw Ms. Diamond. I really did not spend enough time with her. Important thing is I am swallowing solid foods again. Scheduling worked hard to get me in on short notice. I did covid test, blood work, ecg and saw Ms Diamond in the morning and had the endoscopy (Dr Buras) in the afternoon. .. A whirlwind day!!
Please update when you can on how your visit went.

What are the side effects/complications the surgeon's don't talk about? I'm scheduled for the Toupet in December.
The biggest complication is if they cut or damage the vagus nerve. Second is that The Toupet fundoplication or 270-degree wrap is equally effective in controlling GERD but tends to fall apart with time due to lack of strong serosal adhesions between the two edges of the wrapped gastric fundus and your GERD will return. Gas and sever bloating is also common and has effected my whole life. There is a facebook group called Nissen Fundoplication Take Down, that have several story's of people that have had complication that they don't tell you about. I have a NF 360 wrap that has not slipped but I'm so bloated that I there is almost no room for food, I can hardly eat any thing. I'm not absorbing vitamins and now I have SIBO. I will be having my NF taken down in Jan. This surgery was the worst decision that I have ever made. Also to top thing off, they never tested me for low acid in my stomach. Low acid in your stomach can cause the same symptoms as GERD. Heart burn and acid reflux!!!! Make sure that they test you and that you really need the surgery in the first place. I wish that I would have know about this 4.5 years ago. I really wish you the best.
Son had fundoplication 21 years ago at 5 years of age. Saved his life, then changed his life.
