Lichen Sclerosus: Any other women dealing with this disease?

Posted by Kitten92 @kitten92, May 22, 2017

Is anyone out there dealing with this disease? I am currently using a compound ointment that my oncologist prescribed but I'm looking for possible lazer treatments or anything else that might now be available.

@kittycalhoun

Eating plain yogurt every day seems to control the itch.

@kittycalhoun I have been eating plain yogurt for years, and it has not helped but finally I found relief with Clobetasol ointment. Like everything else, I guess even plain yogurt is body specific.

@mary47 Yes, you can keep it under control with medication that works for you (every body responds different to medications) but being an autoimmune condition there is no permanent cure for it.

I wish the scientists would come up with a miracle cure Maybe someday.

@gjs

I use the blue Charmin.

@gjs then I would imagine the red package should be safe as well, since it is the same brand …?

@gjs I believe you are right, in that toilet paper can affect you. Which toilet paper in your experience has the formaldehyde, and which one are you using that doesn’t? I have been using Clobetasol ointment too, to keep LS in control but would like to avoid toilet paper that does contain chemicals like formaldehyde. At the moment I am using Charmin, and sometimes have used the Kirkland brand.

I'd love to know more about the toilet paper as well. I have been using the Kirkland brand for several years, but I think they recently changed it (due to the covid craze w/TP) & after that change was when I started noticing symptoms.
I'm considering buying a bidet attachment for my toilets because wiping (& even patting) is so painful. I do use a perineal bottle to rinse &/or wash, but still need to pat dry afterward.

@k3lliott yea I noticed the change in the Kirkland toilet paper too! Then I switched to Charmin Ultrasoft (which is he only kind of Charmin available in our Ontario Costco). Once his package is finished I intend to switch to the Ultra Steong as the Ultra Soft tends to tear easily.

I think you still will need to dry yourself when using a bidet. You will need to keep a washcloth near the toilet to dry yourself after you use the bidet.

I bought some washable clith wipes on Amazon. They are intended for baby wipes, I believe. I bought them to make homemade dryer sheets... & they come in a convenient bph free plastic dispenser. I think I'll order another one to keep near the toilet for this specific use!

I have had LS for years, I'm sure, but only dx'd 4 yrs. ago. I use clobetasol 2x a week. I seem to be in a flare right now, so will have to go back to daily until it's under control.

Based on her description, I suspect my mom has this condition. I took her to a gynecologist a couple of months ago, who didn’t have a diagnosis. She ordered blood work and I guess was going to discuss it upon the follow up appointment, but my mom canceled it, because she said the doctor wasn’t with it. She may be inexperienced. I sat in during the gathering of information, but stepped out for doctor to do exam. I asked them to get me afterwards, but they didn’t. They left my elderly mother on the table to manage getting down and dressed alone, despite her frailty. It boggles the mind. So, she’s wary of starting with another new doctor. So, trying to treat symptoms.

I only recently noticed the Kirdland paper seemed thinner, seem to cling to itself so harder to pull off the roll. What new symptoms or worse did you have? I recently have had a noticeable increase in tiny, painful bumps but didn't know what to attribute it to. I wonder if that could be caused by the toilet paper. That never occured to me.
