Let's Talk about Gardens

Posted by Rosemary, Volunteer Mentor @rosemarya, Mar 31, 2020

Spring is on it's way and many of us are looking forward to some sunshine and warmer weather and being outdoors...and gardens!
Perhaps you look forward to digging in the fresh spring time soil as you prepare for a summer garden? Do you plant flowers? Do you plant vegetables?
Do you garden for enjoyment? Do you garden for health benefits? What do you want to share about your garden?

@fiesty76 I saw your message to me about watering issues, but I can't find the whole post where it says it was - in lung care. And it doesn't show up in your home page. The post that I see ends with "I still needed to hand water some areas." Is there more to your message than that?

@lioness My wife used to do quite a bit of canning - tomatoes and fruit, but now she only does tomatoes as supply gets low. She freezes anything that comes in abundance - peppers, peaches, pears - and when she cooks a large casserole or batch of spaghetti sauce, she freezes half to enjoy it another day. Same with meatloaf. Makes a triple batch and freezes two. We have a cellar that stays between 45 and 60 all year, so we keep potatoes and onions down there, along with lots of other things. I keep my paint there, too, so it doesn't freeze. It's kind of a multipurpose pantry.

I just got a new laptop with my stimulus check, so I'm having to figure out how to use it. A lot of things are differentt. If I can, I'll post a few pictures. I did manage to transfer everything from my old laptop, and my photos are in Googe Photos cloud, accessible from anywhere.

@rwinney, Ahhhh, these are beauteous. Methinks it takes an incredible mom to rear such a loving son!!! Thank you so much for sharing these pics with us..so soft and lovely.

@lioness, If you can walk 2 miles, surely I can push myself around a few more blocks…maybe, I’ll try for 3 more blocks tomorrow. Thanks for the motivation.

@gingerw. Our city is wide open after a 2 week “stay in place” from gov. A friend and long time smoker called yesterday to say she has a manicure appt. Friday. No manicures for me; enough to keep mine clean from playing in the dirt. Vbg While I’m desperate for a hair cut, I asked her to give my stylist a hello. Just wish I could share a video of how easily one dining in patron could share the virus…used a fake powder and black light for video. Another friend ventured into 2 clothes shops while she and staffs wore masks, majority of shoppers did Not. Friend has chronic sinus condition and didn’t linger but her report confirmed for me that people here will continue to disregard guidelines and prolong the dreaded virus spread.

@merpreb, Laughing Merry because your “roots have roots” and my bangs are becoming a pigtail over my nose!

@jimhd, Your mixed bed sounds lovely! I’ve not tried peonies, any special tips for them?

@lioness. Lol, talking about children's knowledge of technology. I came back from my walk yesterday and got a text from my daughter asking if my son was having a stroke because of the jibberish text she got. Then a few moments later, we both got a video chat invite from my son, on the screen was my grandchild, waving his hand, laughing and saying hi! He is not even two! We had a good laugh.

@fiesty76 I don't have any tips about peonies. I remember my mother had a corner of the back yard for roses and peonies when I was young. They don't like getting dried out. I think that it's good to cut out the dead stalks before the new spring growth comes up. I've had some mildew that needed attention. I'm sure there are things I should be doing to them. We've found that the blooms aren't good cut flowers, but are best enjoyed on the bush. They do have beautiful, showy flowers.

Hello Jim,
Could use some expert advise.
I had 3 hoses each between 75 and 100 feet long.the first hose sprung a leak, so tossed it
Last week. Just took the 100 foot out of the garage, turned the water on, and bang all along the hose seam, must of been 20 leaks, shooting up in the air like ol faithful. Quickly shut water off. All the hoses are kept in the garage, so sun and winter do not ruin them.
Right now, am keeping the 3rd hose in garage. Was wondering what a good brand is, I’m going to Lowe’s tomorrow, need to buy at least one. All 3 hoses came from Lowe’s, maybe I should go Home Depot.?
I had some very sticky electrical tape, tried to wrap the tape in leak area. It did not work.
Your input would help, as I’m not sure about good brands.
I keep saying “ big property,big problems”
Funcountess
