Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

I love your "don't give up" attitude!!

@patriciao I think you are right. It is a good thing with the present situation, although I haven't contributed much lately. I have so many people all over the world that I have to keep in touch with and so I had to cut back a bit on this page. However, I am still here and I am off for my walk in a minute. I have had to be careful with my bad knee recently and the pain keeps moving around. I know it is from my knee but I think if I avoid anything that twists or pulls my knee the wrong way I can still walk. I am being extra careful with my stretches. Also my right arm is getting very bad. It is 7 months since I had a cortisone injection, and a long time since I saw my therapist who helps my arm and my back. I am falling apart all over my body! But I think it is important to keep moving!

How is everyone doing? Just walking up a storm? I’m also wondering if we should continue past week 12 since we’re at week 10. I, for one, know I need the motivation!

I am walking nearly daily as well, this is motivation for me too.

Oh please, let's keep going. I'm really missing my Texas walking buddies, this keeps me going. But tomorrow it will be gloves and a hat - morning temps in the 30's - boo, but typical, just in time for the fishing opener.
I have been taking close to an hour walk most mornings - checking out a different neighborhood each day. Then about 2 hours in the garden each afternoon, you'd think I would be sleeping well, but no - think i need to do some more anti-anxiety exercises.

@sueinmn I often have trouble sleeping too. Have you tried Melatonin and also Theanine. If they help they are at least natural and not like taking dangerous drugs.
I had a lovely walk this morning and on my way in, I was just about to walk down the steps and I heard a crying sound. At first I thought it was a bird and then I noticed a tiny tabby kitten in the middle of the walkway. it was so sweet and it let me pick it up. I brought it inside and I contacted a feral kitten lady. We arranged to take the kitten over to her and she said to not feed it as it was too young and I would cause problems. I got showered and dressed to take the kitten over and then I thought I would check in case there were any more. Sure enough I could hear crying coming from the middle of the thick ferns. This one was black and he was a fighter. I went to pick him up and he spat at me. Well I soon had my husband involved and we caught him with strong gloves and we took the 2 of them over to the kitten lady. We put them in a box behind her car and rang the bell and stood well back for social distancing. She has now fed them and they are curled up with 2 white kittens. She sent a photo and some video over and they look so sweet. The poor babies were starving. I think the mother was trapped and dropped up the coast which is not a sensible thing to do. These kittens will be spayed and neutered later on and homes will be found for them. So that is my good deed story for the day. You can see that I am a big animal lover. I feel happy that at least the kittens were rescued. Happy walking everybody and who knows what we may find tomorrow. LOL

@pollyanne @becsbuddy I too, although I do not participate a lot in the walking group, think the contact can keep us motivated.
We are walking primarily at the HS track since it is flat and the hills on our street bother my hip. I took this picture and told my son and daughter that the sign was to welcome us "seniors" - of course, I knew it was for members of the senior class, but I like to kid them.

I'm sorry to hear your knee and arm are hurting. You are smart to keep moving I think, but if there really is a lot of pain you might want to check with your doctor to make sure you are not doing more damage. I was about to have a cortisone injection in my hip before the world changed so now I am really hoping the time will come soon when I can.

@lioness Are you on Facebook? If so try Silver Sneakers. They have a number of chair exercise routines. I will keep my eye open for other ones too, I am always looking for different exercises and sometimes come across ones that are designed to be done sitting. I have even seen a chair yoga one.
For those of you who might like to take advantage of things like that on Facebook but do not want to have it as a social setting, you can set it up so no one can see that you are on there, or set it up so only a few chosen people can know you are. There are some worthwhile things there, such as the Silver Sneakers exercises.

Yes, Becky, Let's keep walking! I enjoy the conversation and sharing here.
Today I took a different walking route, and I saw 3 different girlfriends that I haven't seen forever! It was a great start to my day.
