Leg swelling after accident

Posted by ctkjose @ctkjose, Mar 6, 2023

Hi, I would appreciate any suggestions on my following situation:

In late January I had an accident with a power tool (grinder) and cut my knee from the inner side to a bit pass the center, right on the patella ( kneecap) and a second laceration high on my calf going diagonally. Both were deep lacerations, I had no fractures and the ortho told me that ligaments are fairly unharmed.

In late February the ortho told me to start putting weight and work on flexion of the knee. Flexing the knee past 90 degrees is fairly impossible, my knee still has a bulge, and the motion of the knee keeps making the healing really hard, especially on the side.

Sadly my appointment for Physical Therapy is for the end of march.

There are a couple of things I would to understand better:

In the beginning, the whole leg was swollen as expected. Over time the swelling went down, now more than a month after, the swelling comes back with movement. The more I move or put weight on the leg the more it swells. It literally rounds my ankle. When I sleep I elevate the leg and in the morning the swelling is gone.

I also get (every night) these brief cramps (muscle twitch) that travel from the injured knee down. They are not painful and happen in a blink of an eye.

Lastly, since the laceration is right on the knee and calf, they keep breaking the scab and the stitches are reaping into the skin.

The Ortho really scared me with the prospect of losing mobility in my knee. But I feel quite lost. Not sure how to balance the whole you need to move the leg and the healing.

This will sound simple, but it works- buy or borrow a wooden rocking chair, sit in it often and gently rock- you'll be able to adjust for what you can tolerate as to knee flexion. As far as swelling- I have muscle weakness in one leg and the weak muscles don't push the fluid up adequately so it swells- I wear a compression kneesock I bought at Walmart (lots of choices on Amazon too) and elevate the leg when I can- at the kitchen table I put my leg up on one of the other chairs. Doing ankle pumps also helps- moving your ankle up and down for a count of 20. The muscle twitches are a pain, I get up and walk or march a little- seems to quiet things down. The PA ot nurse who works with your Ortho may be able to suggest a skin moisturizer that would help to keep the scab area supple.

@ctkjose I’m sorry that I’m so late in getting to your question. Swelling is usually common after surgery as long as it goes down with rest and elevation of the leg. Many doctors also suggest hydrotherapy. This article explains all the good benefits. Ask your doctor if she thinks it would be good for you! Then you can go to a recreation center! I don’t think i would recommend using a hot tub without a doctor’s OK.

Has your doctor seen you leg and the incision site recently?
