Can PMR (Polymyalgia Rheumatica) be induced by vaccine?

Posted by kristem2020 @kristem2020, Jan 2, 2021

Good evening, I’ve recently been diagnosed with PMR. It came on a week after my flu shot October 23, 2020.

Has anyone experienced the same diagnosis after a flu shot?

Mine came on a week after my second Covid booster. No one can say for sure it caused it but neither can they rule it out. My one doctor wants me to get a flu shot but I’m a little leery.

I went ahead and got the flu shot. I had no adverse affects. I actually have gotten more sick from influenza than the 2 times I had Covid. I don't plan to get another covid vaccine.

We need to find out where to report this because I’ve read that it’s unusual and not many cases being reported!! I want to report it so they know just how common it is!!

I know one thing for sure, no covid vaccine for me and never another flu shot!!

I saw a video that states that one of the side effects of the covid vaccine is autoimmune diseases. Beware!!

Hello....there is a site called VAERS (vaccine adverse effects reporting site?) and indeed, I did report my problems, symptoms, etc. from what I believe the covid vaccine did to me. You and everyone that thinks they have been effected by this should go on and report. It won't change what has happened to you, but they may get a better idea of just how many people got sick from this hideous vaccine!!! And yes, even my dermatologist said she has had many patients that had the exact same symptoms I did.....Good luck

ABSOLUTLELY!!!!! I am 99.9% sure (as well as my rheumatoligist has stated) that the Covid vaccine was the culprit in bringing on my PMR. It started after I had the second vaccine, but because it was so subtle, it did not occur to me that it was initiated by it. I have been healthy all my life, but the symptoms that came about were herendous and made me severely ill until I found out what it was. Although I have to say that I have never had a reaction to the flu shot. I will NEVER have another Covid vaccine as long as I live.

I completely agree that Covid Vaccine or having Covid is what triggered mine too. Completely healthy, vibrant, active, and now debilitated. I pray it goes away eventually forever.

Welcome @froehlich22, Sorry to hear the COVID vaccine triggered your PMR. I've had 2 occurrences of PMR but it wasn't caused by the vaccine and thankfully it's currently in remission. I'm assuming you were started on prednisone to help with the inflammation and pain. You might find the following discussions helpful:

Has your doctor started you on prednisone or an alternative medication?

Yes I was started on Prednisone. Prior to my diagnosis of PMR, I went into Rhabdomyolysis. That was the very start of this journey.

I also believe that the second COVID Pfizer vaccine sparked my PMR. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines were of the mRNA type, which is uncommon for vaccines. I've never had a flu vaccine because they are only 18% effective and feed big pharma. I've had a shingles vaccine before Shingrix one came out--I'm still on the fence about getting this "newer and improved one." It is questionable that I ever had PMR since my new rheumatologist believes that the fact I only had symptons while laying down is not indicative of PMR. I was a extremely healthy prior to the onset of my night pains-- I rarely ever got sick. If I ever get another vaccination, I will avoid the mRNA type.

I also had my symptoms started after my second Pfizer COVID vaccine.
I didn’t know it was caused by the vaccine until my third shot and had the labs done a week later to show that my Sed rate very elevated.
No more COVID vaccine for me!

Same story with me, PMR hit me hard for the first time in December 2021, right after my flu and covid booster shots in late October 2021. I am currently on my 4th declining prednisone regimen as each time I moved from 10 mg to 9 mg the pain would come back. My Rheumatologist said they have enough data to say that the booster was likely not the cause of my PMR (I would have eventually got it), but certainly it triggered an earlier reaction.

Has anyone been put on antiviral for Covid and did it affect your symptoms of PMR?
