Klonopin side effects: unsteadiness, imbalance, and falling

Posted by Barb @amberpep, Jan 8, 2018

I believe I mentioned this before, and if so, I'm sorry to rehash it. But several weeks ago I found out that Klonopin, and probably other anti-anxiety meds., cause unsteadiness on your feet, imbalance, and falling. Since then I've been making a conscious effort to do things more slowly and not scurry around so fast when I'm home. Well, since I did have a few nasty falls (one in the garage on the concrete) I decided to get one of those monitors that you can use to call for help. I got the smallest I could find .... it's a Great Call Lively Mobile. It's quite small and you can either put it around your neck or clip it to your belt. Only problem is the rope for the attachment is way too short for me, and the cord is black! That's like wearing a flashing light saying, "I'm old now .... I use this just in case!" So, I'm going to call them to see if I an get one considerably longer and in white. Anyhow, just wanted you all to know that this is quite small and I think will be very unobtrusive once I get it working and fitting well.

Hi all ….. I don't know if I told you all this, but for the passed year+ I've been taking ffalls…. big ones. The other night I did a flying leap across the living room floor, hit a little stand, then the TV stand, and landed on my right side, hard. I just laid there and cried. I finally got up laid on the sofa with my right cheek on an ice pad and fell asleep. When I woke up I looked at the Mayo site which lists all the meds and their side effects, and low and behold 2 of them did cause unsteadiness and falling. So, when I talked to my Psych., he told me which one was most likely to be causing them ….. the Klonopin. So, instead of taking 1-1/2 in the AM, I just take 1, and see him in 3 weeks. Yesterday and today I've already noticed a difference. This would be wonderful if that was the answer.abby

Make sure they know exactly what/how much/how often you are taking this, because mixing WITH Valium would be a big no-no, eek! (Former RN here.)

As I think I mentioned, I did talk to my Psychiatrist about this and he told me it was common with Klonopin. He reduced the 1-1/2 I was taking to just 1 and upped the Propanalol from 1 to 2, which helped with the shakiness. It's worked really well, and I'm no longer flying through the air!

@amberpep that is certainly good to hear, that your shakiness is going away or is lessened and your fear of falling it's not so strong! That's got to make you feel better all the way around, right? Hope you are doing well with all of the other medications now and that your life is starting to show a little bit more sunshine.

Hi Ginger .... thanks for your reply. I have a question for you ..... do you belong to the Eastern Star. I recognized the picture. My whole family was part of that, the Masons, and they got me into Rainbow Girls when I was 14. Truthfully, I didn't like it and left, but just wondering when I saw your picture.

I have been on Klonopin for many years and I have only fallen twice, but that
was due once to getting my foot caught and the other time I was in socks on
a marble floor, and I fell and broke my wrist. I take Klonopin and I walk the treadmill
every day, I don't feel unsteady.

I have one and it came with a pendant with a decent sized cord and it also comes with a rubberized watch to wrap around your wrist.
I use the watch mostly as it is comfortable and you don’t have to worry about it wrapping around an object.
If I fall it asks me if I’m ok. If I don’t answer they then dial the nurses station at my Assisted Living facility.
If they don’t answer the phone they call 911. I was told to test it monthly but they didn’t tell me how. When I called them they said “just press the big button to test it but they didn’t tell me to press a little button on the side first so I just pressed the big button and answered that I was ok but it wouldn’t transmit!

First thing I see and hear Is an EMS rescue coming up the street. I met them outside and they told me (nicely) that I “shouldn’t test it that way” and informed me that “someone could be having a heart attack and we are here instead “.
They forgave me.
