I took .75 in between the 1 and .5mg doses, and each reduction was at 6 weeks. Best to go very slowly. I also had to start taking Lunesta for sleep. I still take it. No klonopin for 17 months. I miss it sometimes but I’m not going back.

2 ReactionsI just got through a Klonopin taper which was too rapid. 0,5 mgs at a time for 2 wks at a time. Do NOT do it this rapidly....l ended up having withdrawal symptoms, ranging from irritability, sensitivity to light, and high startle to just being hard to be around. I was started on Gabapentin 3 x dy, finally getting to 300mg 3 x dy, which has resolved all of my issues. NOW, l will have to look forward to tapering off of... GUESS WHAT????? The Gabapentin!!!!! Good luck on your new journey. If you can take anything away while reading this post, remember to take your time!!! I will be praying for you because this is quite the challenge!!!
I think seeing a psychiatrist would help the best. In ny if you're on mental helath medications, especially any type of benzos or pain meds a primary dr will most likely send you to a psychiatrist. I too was on Xanax for anxiety and sleep. I started getting seizures if I missed a dose or two so I wanted to get off it. I ended up switching to Valium bc my insomnia and anxiety was so bad but it worked out better for me bc I was on too high of a dose of Xanax ( in my opinion). If I dont take a Valium for a couple days I'll sometimes have a seizure.. im just trying to make the point that getting off any benzo can be a pretty serious situation. Also I think about psychiatrist would be able to help you w your sleep and anxiety issue and hopefully recommend something in place of the Xanax for you ( if you are still having issues with your sleep ect..)
Good luck! I hope the process goes well for you!
What was your initial reason for going on clonazapam? And did you do 5% or 10% taper a month? After horrible panic, I was first put on sporadic use of xanax while onboarding zoloft for a couple weeks which caused worse rebound anxiety then was switched to .25 clonazaam twice a day for two weeks and then .50mg for almost two weeks. Zoloft doesn't seem to be working. Took away my sleep and can't eat. Just began to taper clonazapam after I realized how dangerous it is. Started with 10% taper last week. How was your sleep as tapering? Were you on other meds?
Tapering can absolutely be done without the use of gabapentin, another miserable drug to taper. Many, many have done it. 25 year Xanax user here.
I just had to comment on both these posts.
I am 74 and lead a very active life with probably too much exercise.
I recently met with my PCP to review my medications.
Once again Klonopin came up and again she said she didn’t feel any need to have me stop taking it. She had one woman who was a fairly heavy drinker that had fallen several times and she told her it would be Klonopin or alcohol and she chose alcohol.
For me I take 50mg of Sertraline/Zolft along with Buspar, Buprophion/Wellbutrin and Klonopin/ Clonazepam. I did cut back from 100mg of Sertraline/Zoloft to 50mg to help with the sexual side effects which anyone taking an SSRI can certainly identify with. I also added 5mg of Cialis daily.
I am extremely happy with my life.
Hopefully this might help someone out there.
I wish everyone on the site the best.

1 ReactionThanks for your reply. When l was prescribed Gabapentin, l was not told that l would have to get off of it too. My question to the Dr was, " Now that l am taking Gabapentin, isn't that just as bad to discontinue?" He said, "No'. I am hoping his answer is correct for me.
Withdrawal won’t be too bad if you take a low dose and don’t take it for more than a few months. Many compare gabapentin withdrawal to benzo withdrawal.
