Father turned down for kidney transplant

Posted by galtobelli08 @galtobelli08, Feb 7 12:46am

I am wondering if anyone has experienced being turned down for a kidney transplant and then getting approved at another transplant center.
My father went through all the work up and was told he had to have a few surgeries and to get approval from his cariologist, pulmonary doctor and a few others which he did. I was approved to be his living donor and they decided at the last minute they are not going to approve him.
Has this happened to others? Can he get approved at another place. Please note that the place that denied him was not the Mayo, it was the University of Minnesota.

I was declined for a transplant 3x in Dallas in less than 3 months. I've an underlying condition that places me at a higher risk. The second of the three hospitals didn't even bother to meet with me. Instead they just sent a letter saying they weren't going to consider me.

I'm currently undergoing evaluation at Mayo Phoenix and things are looking much more positive. I'll be returning in two weeks for more testing. The selection committee will be meeting mid to late March to determine if I'm approved. I've been on PD since August 2022.

@galtobelli08 Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. There is a lot of criteria to be met for a solid organ transplant, and the transplant team continuously reviews/updates testing prior to the procedure. Have they expressed the reasoning for not approving him? They do owe him that information!

By all means, look in to a kidney transplant at Mayo Clinic. Each transplant center has slightly different criteria. They probably will want to do their own set of evaluation tests, so be prepared for that.

I was trying for a kidney transplant evaluation, and was turned down by six different centers. Based on my active cancer condition, and the ongoing treatment for that, I am not a good candidate.

Wishing you and your dad the best as you seek a transplant center!

Thank you for sharing, and I am so sorry that you are going through cancer and in need of a kidney transplant. This is so sad to hear. I wish there was something they could do for you.
Yes they expressed a few things regarding my father but nothing was hidden or changed from the 1st evaluation when they said ok, well lets do x,y, and z before we make a decision. They never said he was a high risk candidate or that they feel he might be turned down for any reason. So to have him go through many surgeries for his PAD, and other things was more frustrating. They came back and said his COPD, and PAD. However, his COPD is not horrible, and his PAD he had a bypass per their instructions to have it done before they could approve him for transplant was completed and his surgeon even said that they will have no problem attaching the kidney and things now look good. So its all frustrating. They never even asked for updated scans and are determining something off old information which is wrong. I even went to the head of the dept with U of M and explained all that has happened and they are reviewing it because what did go on is not how it should be.

@galtobelli08 That's great to hear they are reviewing the case. You may hear that your dad is back on the transplant list, do you think? Fingers crossed!!

Meanwhile check with Mayo Clinic to see if he can be evaluated for kidney transplant. You know the old saying, "if you don't ask, the answer will be 'no'."

@galtobelli08 - I am sorry your father's process has been so complex. Mayo would be happy to evaluate his situation if he feels like it would be a good idea for him. You (or he) can email me any time at transplant-rst@mayo.edu, and I can let you know more details about the process. All my best to you and your family. - Kristin
