Just found out I’ve had a silent mini stroke!

Posted by ginger123 @ginger123, Sep 21, 2024

After a fall, my doctor ordered a CT scan, and an “incidental” find was a silent mini stroke (not TIA) in a small vessel. Age indeterminate, so not sure how long I’ve had it.
I’m scheduled for Carotid artery Doppler, and a coronary artery CT. Doctor put me on .81 aspirin, and awaiting results of scans.
I’m quite concerned that this increases my risk for a large stroke, or more mini strokes. I’ve changed my diet, losing weight, getting cholesterol down (which wasn’t overly high) and watching BP, (which is normal). I’m 73 and otherwise in good health…. I thought!
Have you had similar findings? What have you experienced?
Thank you. I love our Mayo Clinic group.

I’ve had 3 cerebral small vessel strokes 6 months ago and they spotted 3 older strokes as well. I seem to be ok except for the anxiety and my left leg is a little weaker than my right. Some head confusion but this could also be from the anxiety. I see a therapist for the anxiety and have had 10 weeks of vestibular PT for the tension headaches which are now easing off. I exercise everyday with some cardio 3 times a week, upper and lower body 3 times a week and I walk every day mostly in the house. I take one day of rest. It has helped quite a bit. I am 79 yrs old Good luck to you!

I am also 79 and sometimes think the doctors don't take me seriously when I tell them I know something is wrong, just can't describe it. I am constantly feeling lightheaded at spiritic moments. It doesn't last long, just comes and goes just as fast. They have found that I have small vessel disease in my head but tell me it is nothing to worry about, say that 90% of people my age has it. When I have done research on it, it doesn't sound like nothing and could cause a stroke. Still doing more research on it. I am sure I have had several mini strokes that just haven't shown up. I also have been having trouble with my balance for some unknown reason. Doctors too tell me this is normal for someone my age. Getting tired of doctors telling me it is my age. Wishing the best for you on this Easter weekend.

Work on your balance no matter what the drs say. I have strange feeling too and they can’t always account for it. I think the blood thinners I take, clopidogrel have something to do with it. I think all strokes will show up on a mri. They are little gray dots. Since the strokes or the blood thinners I react well to meds I can take. Not sure why this is.. I wish this had never happened and I’d like life back the way it used to be but I pray a lot and give it to God. This helps me a lot. Have a beautiful Easter
