Just diagnosed with a 8mm spiculated nodule In Left upper lung

I also have added area of GGO in subpleura . Was a heavy smoker for most of my life and my mother had lung cancer and her mother too . Not a great picture? Any chance it might be benign? Many thanks 😊

There are other things that can cause spiculations but with that strong of a family history, please don't ignore any recommended tests. Even without the family history , knowing it is too small to biopsy accurately, I would insist on short term (2-3 month CT) follow up.

Yes that is exactly what I’m going to have. But I’m obviously concerned about it all. Also have some ovarian issues so fingers crossed 🤞

@thoughtprocess, I'm sorry to hear that you are facing this issue. It's always challenging and a learning process to deal with any new health issue. Until a biopsy is performed, and the pathology report shows that it's cancer, there is always a chance that it is something else. I'm glad you are addressing the continued monitoring with your doctor. Is this something that they can access for biopsy? Or do they want to wait to see if it grows a bit more? Sometimes they will only biopsy a nodule that is 10 mm or larger, and then it can depend on the location too.

Yes I will have it monitored and measured for any growth .
Thank you for asking. I have also got a ovarian nodule thats under investigation but in the UK it takes Months to get any results as it’s a free health care system. Of course if you’re wealthy you have options. … I just have to think positively but it doesn’t come naturally for me

My mass was spiculated and they called me within 30 min of getting CT saying that I needed urgent consult for biopsy and that spiculated is almost always cancer. I wouldn’t delay. Mine was squamous non small cell type. They called squamous type the smokers cancer. I smoked 45 years

Hello @susies215, What a whirlwind diagnosis can be! It sounds like your doctors saw enough to be rightfully concerned. Do you remember how large your initial mass was when they first found it? Did you have surgery? How long ago?

Dec 2022 found 3.5 spiculated mass. Feb 2023 open thoracotomy to remove right upper lobe. Had cancer in situ at margins of surgery. They took a wait and see and turned into more invasive cancer. Spread to carina, and left main bronchus. March-April of 2024 had 5 days a week of radiation for 6 weeks. Now spread all over airways of left lung , in 2 lymph nodes and trachea. Just started dual immunotherapy. Are holding off on chemo cause I also have been diagnosed with mycobacterium abscessus which is horrible and a very lengthy treatment with 3 toxic antibiotics. I am not in a good place right now

@susies215, my heart goes out to you. I'm sure the past couple of years have taken a toll on you physically and mentally. The immunotherapy can offer new hope. It can work wonders. Sometimes a new treatment is just what we need, and that hope is enough to keep us going. Obviously, your body is going through a lot with the mycobacterium abscessus treatments too. Be sure to stay in close contact with your doctors and team regarding any side effects that you're experiencing. Big hugs to you.
Do you have something or someone that you can look to take your mind off all of this?, even just a hobby, a good book or a movie.
Hugs to you.

thoughtprocess @thoughtprocess and @susies215. On March 19th I had chest CT Scan. They found 1cm spiculated node and 3 other nodes in upper right lobe. Two were 4mm and one was 5mm. They weren't there 7 months ago during a previous CT of my lungs. two more 4mm nodes in left upper lobe. My Oncologist said he does not believe the 1cm node is a node at all. He thinks I have an infection. the node sits right behind or on top of blood vessels. He stated a needle biopsy would be too risky since it's still too small for a biopsy. He called the pathologist while I was in his office and presented his opinion. At the end of the call, he told me the pathologist was still convinced it was a spiculated node, but he stands firm it's not. He started me on AMOX/CLAV 875mg and 125mg. He saw me through two previous cancers, so I trust him. He asked me to give the antibiotics a chance. I have had a very productive cough for a couple of weeks. He said if I didn't have a cough, he'd be more concerned. He's ordered another CT in 6 weeks. I asked him point blank, " If he's wrong, will waiting 6 weeks affect my mortality and he said No, it wouldn't." If he's right, however, he believes he's saving me from a very risky biopsy. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.
