Joint pain with Metoprolol 50 mg
A few weeks ago, I was switched from Diltiazem 125mg to Metoprolol 50mg. Shortly thereafter I had a successful cardioversion, and it appears that Metoprolol is doing what it is supposed to with my BP and pulse rate at good levels. They are close to what my BP and pulse rate was before the onset of AFIB. The problem is that I now have some rather severe joint and muscle pain in my right arm from the wrist to the bicep. According to information that is available joint and muscle pain is a side effect of Metoprolol. I see my cardio in a about a week, but curious if anyone else has suffered, or is suffering from joint pain while taking Metoprolol.

Sorry that you are experiencing severe joint and muscle pain. I have very minor pain, but honestly I am also on Tamoxifen so I know some of my pain comes from that as well. Good Luck
I have had afib for several years and have taken Metoprolol for a lot of that time. Even with taking only 25 mg., it made me very weak, tired and exercise intolerant. I have been off of it for year and have only taken it for occasional episodes, as an emergency drug. I can not use it on a regular basis.
I have been taking Metoprolol since Feb. 2025 and I have finally put two and two together as I do have fibromyalgia as well but my pain was different. I have been having SEVERE muscle and joint pain. I am 78 and follow a whole foods plant based diet now for 16 years and I went from using exercising equipment at our clubhouse to stay fit to now walking with an upright walker just to exercise outside and my muscles and joints hurt so bad I was afraid of falling. I stopped taking it and its only been a full day and I already have so much improvement. This is a deadly drug!!!!
I have tried so many other drugs( worse side effects). I never realized the connection until now. I was put back on metoprolol recently and my low back pain has returned. I am 66 and very active, thank you for bringing this to my attention.
I have had issues with Metoprolol also. I had to go off it a year ago, due to muscle weakness, exercise intolerance, etc
but went back on it due to afib attacks. I take 12.5 mg just before going to bed seems to work best for me.
My husband 77 has started stated taking
Stonehenge Health Dynamic Joint Health Supplement – Fast-Acting Support with AprèsFlex® Boswellia, MSM, Multi-Type Collagen, Turmeric, Bromelain, Vitamins C & D3 – Supports Joint Comfort
While it is expensive, his knees and joint pains started to diminish within 3 days.
If someone is on blood thinners for AFIB they should not take any supplement with Turmeric in it as it can cause bleeding reaction.
Thx, I will check with his cardiologist.
My mother has Afib and was told that too. No turmeric with blood thinner
I have been on Metoprol 25 mg. since December 2019 with a brief break of 3 months the end of last year while I was waiting for a Pacemaker.
I also have RA, so muscle and joint pain is a given for me. I did not notice any increase of that when I started taking Metoprolol.
I was considering switching to Diltiazem since I believe that some of the stomach pain I've been having may be caused by Metoprolol. It disappeared the 3 months I was off of it. I also had more energy when off of it those 3 months.
Since you had been on Diltiazem , did you have any adverse side effects from it?
