Joint pain: my lower back and legs is incredibly painful.

Posted by euthanesia @euthanesia, Mar 25 7:16am

The bones in front of my legs are so painful and my lower back aches. I am 83; sole caretaker for Alzheimer’s spouse who is getting worse. Finances are limited. Is there diy help for me? I am crippled in the morning. My leg pains seem to radiate from the back but the bones in the front of the leg seem to be the source of the pain vs muscle. After walking I am able to stand but the pain is debilitating and excruciating. Can You help me, please?I have many household chores plus almost constantly caring for my spouse. Blessings to all of you.

What a lot you are dealing with! It is so stressful to be the caretaker of your spouse when you are in so much pain yourself. Stress can make your pain even more painful.
Here is a short video on a simple tapping exercise you can do to relieve stress related pain:

Have you done an internet search on services that your state provides for caretakers? Many states provide no cost relief care and other services for people in your situation. Some cities also have programs for seniors.

I am sending prayers and love to you.

Wish I could be of help. I am in a similar situation and understand your pain. Fortunately for me, I am not a major caregiver. I can't understand how you do it. Thinking of you...

I can sympathize with you. I am in your same age group. Sole caregiver for a spouse with dementia, dealing with chronic lower back and sciatica pain, stress of various degree is a constant companion.
A few things have been somewhat helpful - separate bedrooms gives me some breathing room; setting aside one hour each day for meditation and listening to some music provides relaxation; once a week I go to the senior center to play cards for some social exposure (spouse usually just sleeps while I am gone), do some exercise each day (although sometimes painful and difficult) to try to maintain my mobility.
I am dealing with it one day at a time.

@euthanesia
I have very similar pain. I have lumbar spinal stenosis and radiculopathy plus small fiber neuropathy nerve pain. You can try Salonpas lidocaine patches (good Japanese brand with no scent) for your lower back and neuropathy creams for your legs (those that contain capsaicin). You may be experiencing radiating nerve pain. Another option is to take Alpha Lipoic Acid supplements for nerve pain. It has helped me with small fiber neuropathy nerve pain. Research other supplements for nerve pain. I believe magnesium really helps a lot (like Calm) which may help you, too. Praying you get some relief. Also see if you could get some caregiver support locally to give you small breaks for self care. God bless❣️

I have started taking 600 to 900 mg of alpha lipoic acid daily to hopefully lessen lower back pain and sciatica. I usually take it with food but have noticed since approximately the same time I started taking it that I have indigestion and discomfort during the middle of the night. I am not sure that it is alpha lipoic acid but highly suspect it. Prior to increasing the dosage and for some time have been taking 300 mg daily with no discernible effects. Has anyone else had any problems with gastric or esophageal problems while taking ALA in the dosages mentioned?

I have the same type of pain. Front of shins radiating down to top of foot. Than lower back pain. I’ve been to 3 podiatrists who can’t figure it out. Custom orthotics don’t seem to be the answer either. Can’t walk up hill or carry anything up stairs.
Wondering if this is back or hip oriented. Worse at night when I’m in bed.
I’m at my wits end. Tried lidocaine patches, CBD/THC ROLL ON, lorazapam, gabapentin, Tylenol..

Just curious Ginger, about whether you have used WebMD or talked to your pharmacist about EVERY medication, prescription and over-the-counter, and all vitamins and supplements? I recently had a pain problem that was traced to a medication. My husband had a different issue that was caused by the interaction between two of his prescriptions

All my pain started before any medications.

Was your husband a veteran? Did he serve during the years of the Korean War? Not necessary to actually serve in Korea just have active service during those years. If so, your husband or you may be entitled for cash benefits for a program run by the government for just that purpose. Unfortunately I cannot remember the name of the program but VA can provide it. The monthly amount is generous enough to pay for assistance at home or even in a nursing home. Please check on it.

Sounds similar to sciatica pain which as you are aware starts in lower back. Mine starts there, and moves down my left leg, moves to my knee & sometimes to foot. Am getting yet another MRI soon. I can hardly walk at all some days, a walker is useful but clumsy.
Can you find a really competent back dr.? (It's hard to find one!)
