Jeavons Syndrome & Abscence Seizure Control

Posted by snelson @snelson, Jan 31 12:38pm

Hello-

I wanted to perhaps give some helpful information. My daughter who is 15 and had been diagnosed with Jeavons and Abscence seizures since 2016 and a few months after she started her period, began having tonic Colonic seizures. Of course, as it is with everyone the medicine journey hunt began. After 15 Tonic Colonic seizures in less than a year, we went to Mayo clinic. She now currently takes 75 mg of Briviact 2xs a day (referred to as Keppra light) and 650mg of Lamotrogine 1x a day. This has been a mini success for her. She still has some abscence seizures and Jevons flutters, but they have not been triggering a Tonic Colonic. The only exception was when she did not take her medicine and lied about it. After not taking her medicine she had two tonic colonic seizures within 48 hours. One where she face planted. Of course after the incident she admitted that she did not take her medicine. Telling us that the medicine was a helping. She now makes sure she takes her medicine 7:00am and 7:00pm. Additionally, she was having more Auras and tonic colonics during her period, so we have also started her on the Depro shot, to try and get her a little more control. I hope this is helpful and hopeful for someone. Thank you Mayo Clinic for getting our daughter on a better path for seizure control!!!

Good Morning @snelson
I am happy to hear that your daughter is getting better and controlling more her seizures!!! 🙏🙏🙏
The period is a well-known trigger for women with epilepsy. To reduce my seizures, my epileptologist has talked to my gynecologist and they have put me on a progesterone pill without pausing for 4 to 5 months. I did not feel very well with this pill and the doctors agreed to return to my previous anti-conceptional pill, but with no pausing for 4 to 5 months. This way I could avoid my seizures during my menstruation. But your daughter is well younger than me (I am 53 years old). But do see with the doctors if this could be an option for your daughter.
I am more and more convinced about the strong relationship of our gut with our brain, believing in the power of diets. Taking out gluten from my diet reduced my seizures by 60%, having lately discovered that I am gluten-sensitive. Have the doctor done blood exams regarding this aspect in your daughter? Here is a video from Dr. David Perlmutter, a respected neurologist and neuroscientist about gluten in epilepsy.

Wishing your daughter further improvements in her seizure control!
