Ive been experiencing cankers and mount sores ever since I had dental

Posted by denniswalsh54 @denniswalsh54, Nov 2 12:06pm

My question is how do I get rid of these cankers and mouth sores .I've tried everything from salt ,antibiotics ,mouth rinse and penicillin which
did help in putting more saliva in my mouth which is another symptom that I've been experiencing as well.
I've discussed this issue with the periodontist and my dentist with no solution. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely ; Dennis

@denniswalsh54 perhaps you could get a referral to a periodontist …? It was he who finally diagnosed me with oral lichen planus and prescribed Lyderm gel for my mouth.

Before him, I had been to some dentists, a maxillofacial specialist and periodontist. None of them could figure out what it was and I suffered for years. Oral Lichen Planus is an autoimmune condition so like other autoimmune illnesses there is no cure, but it can be kept under control. Chances are, if you have one autoimmune illness you are likely to have more.

Make sure that your toothpaste doesn’t contain laurel sulfate.

I think you should make an appointment to rule out other causes with your GP. You just mentioned consulting the dental professionals. Was your GP the doctor that prescribed penicillin? Did you mean your sores began just after you had dental work and they were the result of a cut to your gum tissues but they wont heal?
Sorry you had this happen!

First find out what is wrong. I used to use Benadryl liquid and I believe Mylanta swish and spit for pain control. There's an old medicine called kenalog in orabase and that is like a sticky substance for canker sores. I had braces and the sores and metal were digging into each other. Plus tomatoes didn't sting then.

Hi Dennis,
I'm sorry that you are having canker and mouth sores. They can be very painful. I used to have them as well. In my case, they were caused by stress. I used Listerine mouth wash, the original flavor, not the sweet ones. It worked very well and after a few weeks the sores were totally gone.

The other suggestions on here are also very good. Try those and also try and find out what is actually causing your sores.

I wish you the best.

Stress can definitely induce canker sores. Too much acid - At one point, I was having one coffee a day, a small orange, and two homemade lemonades, and the canker sores were weekly. I cut out the lemonades. An occasional orange, one coffee (French Market- 1/2 chicory, 1/2 dark roast coffee). Making it cold brew (mixing coffee grounds with room temperature water - letting it brew for 6-8 hours) lessens the acid content.

Yes, make sure to avoid Laurel sulfate in toothpaste. Almost all toothpaste brands use them (it makes the paste foam up). I consistently get them in the same spot. Do keep exploring doctors, etc. It's good to know the cause (it's a minor irritation from something you're eating, any meds you may be taking, or something more serious.

There are a number of ways to reduce stress without meds. I go for long walks 3 or more times a week. Belly breathing, where you do everything to a count of 4. Breathe in, expanding your stomach out, hold for 4, exhale through your mouth, silently counting to 4 again. Try to exhale as much air as you can - wait for 4, repeat. This exercise activates your 'vagus nerve', which kind of resets you. Be patient with this. I was doing it for 2-3 months when I began to notice a much more pronounced effect.

Good luck
