ITP and safe pain relief

Posted by thisfatoldlady @thisfatoldlady, Mar 14 9:11am

I have had ITP for the past 3 years. In September, I developed serious pain in my knee (no cartilage left in it). Did gel injections that didn't help at all. Have to wait 3 months after injections to pursue knee replacement. In the meantime, any ideas on safe pain relief medication? Tylenol doesn't touch it. Can't take the usual list of NSAIDs, and Tramadol didn't help (plus reacts with two of the drugs I take). Appreciate any ideas!

Voltaren might help. It's a gel (used to be by prescription only but now over the counter). I have arthritis in one thumb and use it when Tylenol Arthritis isn't helping. Not ideal with blood thinners, but otherwise okay to use with the steroid, Methotrexate and biologic drug I'm on. Best of luck 🙂

I have tried numerous topicals - including Voltaren and Lidocane patches to no avail. I appreciate the ideas.

My son swears by CBD but the creams can be insanely expensive, and I didn't think it helped me all that much. I just remembered - my mother in law is bone-on-bone in her knee and found that a heavy duty brace that her doctor fitted her for helped her significantly. Hope you find something that helps you until you can get your surgery.

I have wondered about CBD, but not quite ready to go there. Worried about interactions with other meds I'm on. But worth exploring. My knee is bone-on-bone, and not smooth bones - I have bone spurs (one that is shaped like an actual hook!). I tried a brace (not as heavy duty as what you described), but it held my leg straight out and I couldn't sit or get up from chairs with just one leg.
