Issue with the corners of your mouth?

Posted by Kristi H. @ldylouis, Dec 12 2:19pm

I have been waking up with these sore areas in the corners of my mouth that hurt and show that white area you get from cuts in the mouth. Has anyone else experienced this? It only started after the Big 3.

Might be thrush? You could look up home treatments, which are benign as I recall, and see if any of those work.

As I was writing this post, thrush came to mind. I thought this with a film in my mouth a few weeks ago, and it just went away. I believe it was a reaction to an antibiotic or something back then. I'm going to try lip balm tonight and see if it helps.

Maybe something stronger than balm. Google home solutions for thrush. I believe yogurt is one.

I'll see what else I have in the house from the search. I just saw that I have a dermatologist appt. next week, so if it is still an issue, I already have a way to fix it. Of course, if it gets worse, I'll call my doctor.

Yogurt definitely helps but there is medication for it as well. One is a liquid, another is merely just 2 pills taken a week apart.

I should have thought of thrush when I first saw your post yesterday, duh! There is also a mouth rinse, with Nystatin in it, used for thrush. When I was on the Big 3 antibiotics plus inhalers, thrush kept coming back, so I had a bottle of it. I'm pretty sure it was a prescription I got from the dentist.

I know thrush can be a side effect of antibiotics because that is what happened to me in the mid eighties after 24/7 liquid antibiotics for Legionella and Mycoplasma Pneumonias of which I had at the same time. The problem I was having wasn't diagnosed soon enough and became rampant throughout my system.
After a good few months of it being so bad and my having multiple problems, not knowing what could happen after having had the antibiotics and not knowing what foods to stay away from (high carbohydrates/sugar etc.) I went to an Infection Disease Doctor who specializes in HIV/Aids because I know that illness can bring on Thrush/Candida. When I questioned the possibility of me having Candida she told me only HIV/AIDs patients often develop Candida. Well thank goodness I finally went back to my primary doctor who also somewhat practiced alternative medicine. He immediately looked at me and judged from my face, eyes, tongue etc. that I did have Candida and put me on Nystatin. It cleared the multiple problems I was experiencing.....chronic fatigue, joint pain, sensitive to the touch etc. etc.
So, this is one of my reasons why I am so hesitant about start a long journey with antibiotics. Yes I do have a better understanding now... I have eaten healthier ever since then and also have known about the need to take probiotics along with limiting certain foods, especially when on antibiotics.
So much to know and thank you Sue for all you do know and share with us.

What foods do you limit while on ABX? Those with high sugar content?

Yes "(high carbohydrates/sugar etc.)". Limit and completely stay away from those.
Found this for you just now: Thrush and candida, both caused by a yeast fungus, are considered to "feed" off of high sugar and carbohydrate intake, meaning that a diet with excessive sugar and refined carbohydrates can contribute to their growth and potential overgrowth in the body."
It had gotten so bad in was overgrowth in my body.

I agree with others, sounds like thrush, which can be a response to antibiotics and also steroids. I would be very intentional about treating thrush. My mother got it in response to IV antibiotics and it became quite severe and problematic.
