Are blood clots from the nose a worrisome problem?
My husband has daily blood clots that come out of his nose when he blows. They are always about dime-sized. He usually feels the blood clot “coming” so he knows when to blow. Tonight the clots are coming out quarter-sized and from the mouth too.
BTW his primary always says it’s probably allergies or irritation from his CPAP machine use. It’s not getting better with the prescribed nasal sprays nor the allergy pills.
Should we worry and see his primary again?

I'm so sorry tht your husband is having these problems! I would go back to his doctor and see what is going on. It sounds like it is increasing instead of getting better. You don't want to wait until your husband has a real emergency to deal with. I had something similar with the blood from my nose and it was cured with a mild antibiotic cream.
I'll say a prayer for your husband.

1 ReactionYou should worry ABOUT seeing your primary again. And are you using “clots” in the strict sense? Or like “globs”. Clots can interrupt blood flow. Is this consistent blood loss? Is he anemic? Does he “cough up” the substance, or does it drain down? Does his nasal air flow pass through without obstruction, noiselessly? Sure, I have had the occasional case of a little “nose” blood mixed with mucous or whatnot, but promoted by a condition of some sort. I wish you well. Please find a cause. And BTW, is your husband over 65, as I? Unfortunately it could affect the quality of care.

1 ReactionHi @jag1203, and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. It has to be concerning when what you are used to your husband experiencing changes, especially when it is seeing more blood. If it were me I would feel better contacting his doctor to find out what they think.
You mention blood clots when he blows his nose are worse and he is not getting better with the prescribed nasal sprays or allergy pills. What are the nasal sprays he is taking? How long has been taking these, and what is not getting better?

1 Reaction@hopeseeker22 yes, the clots are in a literal sense. Thick clots that are not breakable when squished. It is consistent, daily and multiple times a day. Sometimes he coughs the substance, but sometimes it drains from the nose and he spits it out. It doesn’t come up with mucus.
We are going to make another visit to his PCP or change PCP’s at this point because it’s not the first time that there seems to be no urgency on the doctor’s part and a condition/disease is discovered later down the line. I just wanted to read others’ opinions and not want to subjectively overact.
@jlharsh We have gone to his PCP with photos of the clots and he mentioned it was possibly allergies or the dry air of the CPAP that was causing these clots. The doctor said “moistening” the nose should diminish the clots. He was first put on saline spray for a month, the bleeding continued daily with dime-sized clots so he was put on Fluticasone and Cetirizine. In the recent few days the clots are becoming more frequent and bigger in size and sometimes blood just start dripping from his nose. I would figure that the spray/pill would alleviate either the frequency or the size of clots but it seems to be getting worse.

1 Reaction@jag1203 It is difficult to maintain a balanced perspective walking through concerning troubleshooting/treatment processes and you are doing such a great job. Kudos!
If I understand correctly you are concerned because you expected treatment your husbands doctor recommended to have the opposite effect that it has, to decrease or possibly eliminate clots of blood from his nose. It is difficult to know if this is a problem or part of the process.
I wish I could solve your problem. I can tell you I used a saline nasal rinse for a time. That was replaced by Flonase (Fluticasone steroid nose spray) and I was told it would take a good 6 weeks for it to kick in. Then, instead of an antihistamine pill like Cetirizine I added antihistamine eye drops. I was concerned when I started having blood in my nose and eventually, clots like you describe. What I could tell was that the bleeding would fluctuate depending on what was going on elsewhere in my body. I don’t necessarily understand it but I have kept working with my doctor(s) and am doing much better.
I pulled up an overview about nosebleeds that you may want to take a look at if you haven’t already. It may help to review common causes to help you know if your husbands doctor is on a diagnostic/treatment path you are comfortable with. Also, clicking through to the next page there is a section about talking to your doctor. Specifically, “Talk to your doctor if you're having frequent nosebleeds, even if you can stop them fairly easily. It's important to determine the cause of frequent nosebleeds.”

Is there anything your husband has tried that helps his nosebleeds? Do you think you will visit with his doctor to discuss the increased bleeding that is happening since starting the prescribed treatment?

2 ReactionsJag,
You probably have read a ton of articles but perhaps not the one blow. Looks all-encompassing. Maybe something will click. So sorry for him. Tom
