You are in a difficult situation. From what I read, you have parathyroid disease that affects your calcium but you cannot have surgery?
If so that means that you have to have a dual action of lowering calcium and protecting your bones. Am I understanding this correctly?

I believe that this is the injection etc to which you are referring:
Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA): A needle-like probe uses heat to destroy the overactive parathyroid tissue under local anesthesia.
or sometimes this procedure may be used:
Ethanol Ablation: Medical-grade alcohol is injected directly into the parathyroid tumor to kill the overactive cells.

Some good news though is that if you can take care of the parathyroid then your osteoporosis may completely clear up or at least become much more manageable. The PTH and calcium levels though high aren't horrible it seems so that is good also.

Please continue to let us know how you do. You seem to be in good medical hands and just need time to let this problem reveal its self completely.

@kathleen1314 You are correct about my situation. Since my blood calcium and PTH levels aren't extremely high, just at the normal-high levels or slightly above, my Mayo Dr said we could wait a year and then re-evaluate regarding ethanol ablation. That technique is done 3 times over a 3 day period, and then isn't always successful or has to be redone in the future. My OP is severe so the procedure won't correct it, but may help it from getting worse in the future.

Thanks for your concern.

I’ve been getting Prolia injections since 2023, every 6 months. I was not informed about the side effects of going off of it. I have researched since and found out you must switch to a relay drug . At the time I was seeing a Rheumatologist that told me I should not use anything new because my kidneys would not handle that. I got kidney damage after Cancer -Chemo-prednisone and all the other medications I had to take after Stem Cell Transplant. So I’ve been in remission for almost 5 years! All I have now is Severe Osteoporosis. I started taking Thryve Nad+ but I’m not sure it’s really going to help at this point. My DEXA scans had shown improvement until last year. My Rheumatologist suggested other options, however, I’m afraid of new meds. Now I’m told that my insurance will no longer cover Prolia but an alternative is a drug called Jubboti is available and will give me the same results. Is there any supplements that can actually help improve my scores? Thank you.

Under the main heading Osteoporosis, you will find many subheadings, some of which discuss approaches to osteoporosis other than medications. I am not endorsing those (just don't have experience with them) and am not a medical professional.

@susan73 in addition to Prolia shots, I take a
calcium supplement with Vitamin D.
Calcium Citrate is better absorbed than calcium carbonate.
Citracal.
That’s it.

@mimiroy your doctor will guide you. I have been getting Prolia shots for several years, my bones have improved, and I don’t have any side effects from it at all.

@SusanEllen66 I had 11 Prolia injections with seemingly no side effects, until one day I could barely walk - atypical femur fracture, out of the blue. And stopping Prolia presents its own problems. I wish you well.

I’d never heard of Thirmik before your post so I googled it. They make a supplement called Thryve for women that is advertised for bone health. It contains NAD, quercetin, and resveratrol which are popular in the wellness community to address inflammation.

There are no links to any scientific research studies on how these ingredients improve bone density despite the website touting that they are “backed by science”.

The website also leverages several marketing tactics like promoting the illusion of scarcity, e.g., “November batch sold out”, and a subscription model.

Personally, I would not use this supplement for these reasons.

Prolia would not be my first choice for a medication as there is a rebound effect associated with it that can cause multiple cascading fractures if you have to come off it abruptly. I would recommend that you see an endocrinologist specializing in osteoporosis for guidance.

I went to àn endocrinologist & he wants to start me on fosamax. I read about the drug & could not believe that a doctor would want to put me on such a drug! I am going to have to do a lot of research & figure it out myself.
