Is there any way to manage Bipolar 1 without medications?
Recently diagnosed with rapid cycling bipolar 1 disorder. What are the odds I can do this without medications? I really don't like the short and long term effects presented in many of the medications I've been referred to.

I have a family member on Lithium. The doses are not as high as they used to be. After a few years of stability an anti-depressant was added. They are doing really well.
I do know one person who has tried to manage without, but have seen relapses and her life style is very rigidly controlled so as to avoid too much stimulation.
I was diagnosed with Bipolar depression in 2009 and was at the drug buffet until early 2023 when I began weaning off the antidepressants and antipsychotics, which I never tolerated well. Side effects were severe for me, including massive weight gain, blood sugar control difficulties, paranoia, loss of coordination, brain fog, tics and twitches, and anhedonia.
As I started titrating off the Zyprexa and Lamictal, I began exercising more and I think this has helped immensely in maintaining mood control. I now have occasional mild mania events and haven't been depressed in almost two years.
Caveat: Don't try kicking the drugs w/o professional guidance. It can be tricky finding the right glide path to a smooth landing and everyone's unique.
Hope this helps.
