Is Mirtazapine 15mg too much for an 80 year old healthy woman?
My healthy wife had a mild case of covid as I previously wrote about. She was lethargic thereafter. Doctor diagnosed her as depressed and prescribed the drug. She perked up and is fine. When awake! She continues a long habit of staying up until 2 or 3 a.m., but now just doesn't wake up. She feeds our dogs at 7 p.m., but I have to get her up. She eats very little and weighs about 105/108. Doctor is happy with her keeping weight over 100. Thoughts?

Mirtazapine has a side effect of sleepiness. It is often used off label for insomnia. Perhaps discuss with doc lowering dose or switching to a different medication. Paradoxically, lowering the dose can increase the sedating effects in some people. What time does she take it? Perhaps taking it at say 8pm would help her get too sleep earlier and perhaps minimize the daytime somnolence.
It is a very sedating drug. If you think it is too much on the side effect can you let the doc know? It helps people gain weight. Is that what you all want?
