Is gabapentin giving me allergy symptoms?

I just started taking gabapentin for some arthritis issues. My hip and leg hurt bad at night that I can’t sleep and started gabapentin and now I feel like I have really bad allergies. Has anyone experienced this?

Hi, @tryingtounderstand - welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Having your hip and leg hurt so badly at night you can't sleep sounds rough.

Here is some Mayo Clinic information on the medication you mentioned:

- Gabapentin (oral route) https://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements/gabapentin-oral-route/description/drg-20064011

I'd suggest reviewing the list of side effects in this article, seeing if any match with your recent experience and sharing this with your doctor.

I noted a few potential side effects of gabapentin that could relate to typical nasal allergy symptoms. Are these the types of symptoms you've had? If not, what symptoms have you been dealing with?

OH yea, gabapentin is toxic to me. It causes me a lot of different troubles. I found that the arthritis pain I had in my hips and knees and other parts of my body could be handled by exercise, I had tried other things to help, pain pills helped a little but who want to be addicted to them. I did not believe exercise would help and my doctor kept telling to try it. I did not want to do exercise, I did not want to and didn't want to believe it. BUT I not want to have surgery either, so I started some exercise not a lot but it did help and so I added some more and it really helped. So now I am pain free from my pain in my hip, knees and shoulders, that sleeping in certain positions made worse. Exercise helped me and I did not believe it would. But I am a believer now, I do exercise in the morning every morning and I am making myself walk also daily. It has made a world of difference.
