Clinical study on Denosumab (Prolia) - Will it change recommendations?

Posted by dyana @dyana, 2 days ago

Has anyone's doctor discussed this study? It's a little too technical for me, but I wondered if and how it is going to change current recommendations. It can be found on the NIH PubMed site by searching for "Denosumab for osteoporosis treatment lamy"

Dyana, thanks for the link from Switzerland.
Possible changes to protocol are listed in table 3 as observations.
I would have missed this article curious how you found it.

"Denosumab for osteoporosis treatment: when, how, for whom, and for how long. A pragmatical approach"

The common name for Denosumab is Prolia. Many members have shared their experiences with Prolia, both good and bad. Using the search function in the Osteoporosis support group can help find a lot of relevant discussions:

I typically filter by discussions and then search for discussions that have been recently active.

@dyana, if you are comfortable sharing, are you currently taking Prolia or has it been prescribed to you? Do you have any specific questions or concerns?

One of my doctors has recommended Prolia, so I've been following a group specific to that treatment on Facebook. Someone actually summarized the article for group members, but I'm not familiar yet with terminology. Steep learning curve!

I'm not on any medication at this time. Prolia was recommended by one of my doctors; Fosomax by another. I've been on the line (on both sides) between osteopenia and osteoporosis for 15 years, but am just starting to take it seriously. Working my way along the learning curve and glad I found this forum.

@JustinMcClanahan I just realized the post title was changed. Isn't denosumab Prolia rather than Tymlos?

@dyana, My apologies, my wires got crossed a bit while reading the research for a few different studies at the same time. The title has been updated to correctly reflect Prolia.

Thank you for sharing this article/study. As a 65 yo who made the decision to stop Prolia after one injection it provides some reassurance about my decision. I was diagnosed last January after a Dexa showed -2.6 in my lumbar spine. As I have early stage kidney disease, I consulted my docs who recommended Prolia. While I didn't have any major side affects I was concerned about long term use and did more reasearch and saw a rheumatologist. He recommended that I continue Prolia, dismissing my concerns. I requested further tests and a new Dexa, which showed improvement in all areas. He attributed this to the one shot of Prolia, but I have my doubts. The second Dexa was more thorough and done by a more experience technician. I have decided to delay any treatment and continue my weight bearing exercise and diet program, and to have another Dexa in one year. The Rheum thought this was a reasonable plan (!). Given the study findings about long term use for younger patients and those with kidney issues, I will continue to be wary of Prolia for the time being. I am very appreciate of this group and those who share their experiences and information!
