Is anyone else dealing with a neurogenic cough?

I have been a patient at Mayo for about two years. After meeting with a pulmonologist , allergist, gastroenterologist, and ENT specialists; and trying a variety of treatments, I am still coughing. I have had three laryngeal blocks. It helps somewhat, but I’m still coughing. The diagnosis is “neurogenic” cough. It’s not a simple cough. It’s a body wracking, continuous, harsh cough that can take away my ability to speak or have any volume to my voice. It severely limits my ability to socialize; the cough is irritating to other people and makes others very uncomfortable. They can even get angry listening to it, although I usually don’t have any control over it. Ricola cough drops with honey and herbs help. I I know this is a rare problem, but I would love to know if there are others out there and how they are faring.

I am very happy to find this group! I also have been dealing with chronic cough for 10+ years. I am currently on allergy shots - I’ve had asthma testing at the hospital, bravo test - so they ruled out asthma and reflux. I went to Bastain Voice Clinic in December and started on amitriptyline and it was working great…. But lately not so much… I’m losing hope again. They said next step would be adding Gabapentin into the mix - so I am trying to figure out if I want to try that.

@irishgirl99 It’s SO difficult having to decide between taking drugs that can have definite side effects (amitriptyline/gabapentin, etc.) and having a chronic, gut-wrenching neurogenic cough every day 🙁 I wish I knew a better answer…

I first dealt with the same issue as you are about 18 years ago. It was triggered by new carpet in my church. I walked in and within 15 minutes I felt like I was coughing up a lung. It didn’t stop for 6 years. I couldn’t go out to eat to the movies be with anyone who used any kind of strong smelling stuff. I was alright most of the time at home and with family members and friends who cared enough not to use the stuff that set me off. I went to all the specialists try all the inhalers antihistamines. I moved to a different state went to a new allergist, tried it all again, but he listened to me, he discussed my case with an ENT, I went to see him. He started me on tramadol I started out 2 50mg tablets a day and worked up to 6 50mg tablets per day. I took them for several months. My cough went away unless I was exposed to something that set me off but it was not nearly as bad. That was 10 years ago and the cough is now back. Bothe the allergist and the ENT are no longer in my area, my family physician had access to all the records because of being in the her system. She read my records, saw my reaction in her office today and wrote me a prescription for tramadol. I was in tears thinking I would have to live that way again. I hope you can find someone who will do the research to help you.
