Intestinal Metaplasia: What do you do to lower the risk of cancer?

Posted by evapa @evapa, Apr 22, 2021

Has anyone been diagnosed with intestinal metaplasia? What does your doctor recommend? I was just diagnosed and am very anxious about it because of the risk of cancer. Would like to hear your experience with it. Thank you.

I was also just diagnosed with IM in my esophagus and stomach. My doctor called me and caught me off guard and now have a load of questions so will request a follow-up. Thank you all for the great advice and suggestions. Are there food, drinks, etc. that you know of that you should look towards for healing properties? I have had reflux for so long and thought I was good at avoiding all the trigger foods and yet I still got this diagnosis. I feel like I am going to have a small variety of foods to eat! I don't smoke or drink very often either. I read about ginger tea and lots of veggies, and whole grains. Do you avoid dairy as well? I also have a hiatal hernia and was on protonic for years but she just switched me to a time-released PPI and my reflux has been somewhat better.

All you can do is cut out fatty, fried foods, soda, booze, vinegar products. Drink unsweetened almond milk, green tea, and lots of water. Don't eat before bedtime. Lose weight if needed and exercise.

Was he put on a PPI? Don't eat Italian,Mexican or any fried foods. No booze,or soda, no smoking. Don't use salt or pepper or any seasonings. I live on chicken breast that I cut up and boil it. Stay away from citrus fruits. Melons are good and ripe bananas. Whole wheat bread is good. Stay away from fast food, it's loaded with fat and sodium. Don't eat 3 hrs before bed. Buy the book "The acid Watcher diet on amazon. Great info and what to eat and avoid. Now that he had H Pylori, he has a better chance of getting stomach cancer.

The fact that the cause of his IM is H. Pylori is actually a good thing because the virus can be treated. With proper medications and the right diet I've read where IM can be reversed in some people. I have IM with no known history of H.Pylori. That can be a bit more concerning because the cause of my IM is not really known. My doc explained to me that the chances of IM actually transitioning into cancer is extremely small and he told me to live my life. Once his H.pylori is irradicated, it's not that he can NEVER have mexican food etc.... He just needs to be mindful and only have it once in a while. That book will help him a lot. Great recipes too. I'm on it and I don't feel deprived at all. I eat what's on the Acid Watchers Diet mostly through the week and on Saturday nights I eat what I want within reason. He does need to keep stress down as much as possible. Our stomachs react to stress via secretion of stomach acid more than most anything else. I wish him a quick healing for his H.Pylori.

I don't know if your husband is a coffee drinker like me but I buy Healthwise low acid coffee on amazon. For creamer I use almond milk which will neutralize any acid in the coffee. I drink 2 cups a day.

Yes I may have silent reflux and I am careful with my diet. I am trying to get an appointment with a gastroenterologist who specializes in intestinal metaplasia. My regular gastroenterologist says it is not likely to develop cancer from it but I like to find out more and educate myself. It is good talking to you.

I’m in the same situation. I was diagnosed with IM a few days ago. I haven’t been able to sleep and I find myself really down.
I had H.pylori and treated a few years back. I’m pretty sure I got IM from that bug. I’m in my early 50’s.

I also have acid reflux. Approximately 3 years ago I had the Stretta procedure to correct the acid reflux. During the initial endoscope I had pre ulcers forming and erosive esophagus. After the stretta my erosive esophagus and my pre ulcers went away.

I just underwent another endoscope and the doctor said my esophagus looked good. I’m waiting for the Bravo study to verify my acid levels.

I really encourage everyone with acid reflux to do your research on the Stretta procedure.

Anyone have any suggestions on Intestinal Metaplasia? Can it be removed at an early stage through retraction? Who specializes in IM?
