Internal Mayo Referrals: How do they work?
Hi,
I already had my initial visit, and my doctor sent a referral to another internal Mayo dept. I was just notified of further testing later in a couple of months.
I’m curious how does this work? Do I see both dept doctors in one meeting, or does the referring dept just gets notified of results and they have a discussion? Or am I passed to the new dept?
I do see that I have a consult near the end of the list of appointments, but no doctor is listed.
Thanks.

Welcome to Mayo Connect, I am glad your experience at Mayo has been positive and getting support you needed.
Do you care to share location and type of specialist your seeing ?
Please see my response below. Do you think this type of patient would be a good fit for the consultative medical group that is a subspecialty group, I believe, under General Internal medicine? I would like to refer that patient. He is currently a Mayo patient but receives surgery related services. Those surgeons do not seem familiar with Internal Medicine programs -at least not for surgical outpatient patients like him.
I, myself, have been a patient at Mayo since about 1990. Back in the 1990s and through until about 2015, I also received primary care or internal medicine services. The internal medicine physician or NP scheduled all your appointments and then saw you at the "end" - helping you put together the information you received. It was a great service but Mayo disbanded that service at least for non employee outpatients like myself, concentrating on providing specialty and subspecialty services. My understanding is that Mayo employees and family members can continue to be seen by Internal Medicine type providers and this type of program is also available through the Executive Physical program. (I, myself, continue to see appropriate subspecialty providers and that works for me.)
Thank you for any information.
It’s ’hot potato’ vs a beautifully orchestrated relay baton handoff @jferg01 ? No one likes being a potato.
@hsminc, I recommend contacting Mayo Clinic directly regarding the patient to be referred to Internal Medicine. Here is the referral information for patients for any of the Mayo locations as well as the link for Referring Physicians http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63
The schedulers will be able to answer your questions about internal referrals vs new referrals for returning patients.
Thank you. This is useful information.

When I had my annual kidney CT scan in June [I was seeing an endocrinologist] the radiologist referred me directly to urology. They contacted me after having a powwow with endo.
In about 1987 I was seeing a mayo rheumatologist. I asked her about how I could get a short notice appt with another physician and her reply was that we just make a personal call.
