Insurance approved liver transplant surgery

Posted by jmp1234 @jmp1234, Feb 21 6:45pm

My insurance company called today to update my medical info. During this discussion she told me I was authorized for surgery payment and I was now on waiting list. I sent a request for verification of this to my transplant coordinator at mayo clinic in jacksonville to make sure I am indeed on waiting list. My insurance is very good and always on time. Any one else have a similar experience? Thanks

@jmp1234, I did not see this post earlier when you posted it. So today when I came across it, I want to tell you that I am happy for you to be able to begin your journey foeward for a liver transplant. I know that you are relieved to have heard from your insurance company that your surgery will be covered! That's a big relief.

I transplanted a liver and kidney at Mayo Rochester and I know that you are going to receive top notch support and education from your transplant team. I see that you alrady have a nurse coordinator who will be ypour contact. I am here if you have any questions about any of the process from a patient experience.
- What is next for you? Where are you on this journey? Have you completed the evaluation? Or are you already on the transplant waiting list?

I am on the list. All evaluations are completed. We are waiting on call. Go bag is ready. We'll be staying at on campus lodging. Insurance covers lodging. Our home and pets will be in good hands during post transplant follow ups. I am having a difficult time gaining weight as I have lost a lot during the past 14 months of processing. Ascites is a major issue for me. They say average wait time in jacksonville is 4 months. I am having paracentis every 2 weeks and it's a real killer dealing with that for a year now. Thanks for your interest and reply. Just knowing there are folks I can connect with who have dealt with similar issues is a wonderful thing. I wish there was a way to know about how many with the same circumstances are in Florida waiting. Ty again.

Got the news yesterday that insurance approved my husband’s liver transplant! 2 minutes before that call I was informed by the hospital that he also needs a kidney transplant but they have a plan to obtain optimal outcomes. What a rollercoaster. So this delays the official listing but long term is the best plan. Just going with it! Great to hear everyone’s stories.

Good news keeps on coming! No April Fools joke here, he was approved for the kidney transplant today. So he should be listed on UNOS for the combined liver-kidney transplants by the end of the day, hopefully. In the meantime, how to find the balance to juggle all of this new medical/caregiving with the rest of “normal” life activities? I need to get back to work at some point (have used about half my yearly FMLA hours already) and I’m anxious about time management. Any tips are appreciated!
