Incontinence and coffee

Posted by edinmaryland @edinmaryland, 2 days ago

71 y.o had RARP in January, nagging incontinence since however I can see improvement, less leakage, better in the mornings, dry at night Still, I imagine I have at least several months to go if I am lucky.

I am taking Gemtessa and have tried to avoid bladder irritants. It has been five months since I have had coffee and I miss it.It really is my only vice. I understand that both the caffeine and acid can be bladder irritants and I certainly do not want anything to make me go backwards. However, I was thinking of trying a half cup to see what happens (low acid, maybe caffeine free for starters. has anyone else had experience with re-starting coffee under these circumstances?? thanks much

I’m with you I absolute love my coffee but had to give up of curse my issue it’s different then yours in my case irritates the bladder I found that if I have my espresso decaffeinated and dark roast is less of an issue, it’s also working with regular caffeinated coffee, ( no sugar) espresso has a short brewing time so extracts less acid dark roast has less acid naturally also look for low caffeine coffees, stay way from Starbucks which uses a highly caffeinated coffee or added caffeine

Thanks Zzotte how long did you wait before you tried coffee

My doctor limited me to one cup of tea per day at first when my radiation cystitis flared up. Two years later, I'm fine drinking as much tea as I want, but try not to overdo it because I still do have some urinary tract irritation.

Couple of months, I gave up a lots things, I went vegan and more as you know, I told my Doctor I’m going back to my one espresso a day. He said it’s your choice. So far no issues, I did add more water to my daily drinking just in case 🙂

This is important to me and helps

My PT also recommended taking a good dose of water before and after my coffee experiment So I will do that
I have been trying hard to eat and drink so that I limit bladder irritants.
I miss my coffee, for 40-50 years I have started each day with coffee.

Has anyone else had any experience with this?

I have not had a UTI that I know of. How does coffee or tea cause UTIs? Thanks Northof the border

Caffeine doesn't cause a UTI, but it adds significant irritation when you have a UTI, radiation cystitis, or both. Ditto for carbonated beverages, alcohol, spicy foods, etc.

Hello Canada!😊
I had proton radiation 2 years agon. But now 2 years later all of sudden having some irritation, urgency and frequent urination increase.

I then read your post and thinking I maybe the culbrit. I drink mor decal coffee that I used to . I did not know acid can cause irritation also, and carbonated beverages (which I have increased also)?

I try to drink no more that 1 bottle of Cherry Coke Zero (no sugar) but noticed my urination more frequent and urgency leakage since started drinking it. I added the drink to cut down on snacking and enjoy the taste of the cola.

Will the caffeine cause the symptoms you mentioned. Seems like I might be the cause of my increase in symptoms of more frequent urnination, urgency, drippling, etc.

I knew caffience caused a direutic affect on kidneys (from HF doctor) but did not know such a limited amount my contribute to it. I see you say acid in coffee doing it also. I do drink more decaf coffee also.
Is there any acid in cola?

I have my 2 year after treatment R/O follow up at UFHPTI on Tuesday. Monday have my PSA lab. Last one was .22 so hoping same or lower but now worried I might have been irriatating that little guy that had gone through so much 2 years ago.

I like your PT’s advice - you’ll dilute any irritants that might cause an issue. Do that for about a week and see how you do; adjust your water intake accordingly until you need the least amount - or none.

Your experience may be different, but carbonation causes more irritation for me than anything else, so pop might be even worse than coffee/tea. You'll have to experiment a bit.
