In limbo- MRI Dec 19, CT Dec 30. Only info is that it’s at least 6cm
Hi-
I’m an accident- at least that’s how they described it. I had an MRI on December 19th due to a back injury. My birthday is December 21, and with the holidays along with what I thought was going to be the same old result, (yes your back is still injured and yes we did in fact remove three disks) the NP ordered a CT scan with contrast. Again, I had no suspicion other than “typical insurance, instead of just doing this all at once, they have to step through all of these hoops.” I was lucky (I thought) and scheduled the ct for December 30th. By chance my son had called and I couldn’t answer my cell. When I had time to call, I noticed several calls from my pain NP. I opened the most recent one and heard “you have a mass on your kidney that is at least 6cm. I ordered a ct scan of your abdomen. It is likely cancer.” A bit about myself. Cancer isn’t new to me. My daughter (24) has thyroid, my father had three genetically different tumors meaning he didn’t have mets, he literally had three primary cancers and died from the third. 2 Aunts had lung cancer and died, my sister has thyroid, my FIL has bladder, and a cousin had a very rare type of bone cancer that presents itself on the top of the spine near the brain stem. I had already assumed a foregone conclusion that I would have cancer, but I didn’t expect it to be caught accidentally. That brings me to my point. It is large as kidney cancer goes, my primary doctor provided the information that it is likely stage I and will probably require the removal of my kidney. Meanwhile, getting anyone who actually deals with kidney cancer to look at the CT and MRI is next to impossible, and besides what my PC provided, I have no other information. I purposefully have not researched this other than chat GPT to provide me advice on how to talk to loved ones and providers, but I am concerned that the size alone is an issue. One main concern is what is the next step? Will I need a biopsy or will the surgeon just go ahead and remove the mass? I have a choice (I believe) between UC Davis and Stanford both of which have an outstanding surgeon and latest techniques. I could go to the Mayo in Phoenix but I would prefer to remain closer to my treatment team. Any thoughts? Anyone else have a stage I tumor that was 6cm plus? How worried should I be and how quickly should I get the thing removed?

Hi! First thank you all for your sharing and advice. I really appreciate the help. I don’t have any new updates. I will meet with two different surgeons this week. One is from Stanford and the other is from UC Davis. I have made sure they have all the results and hope they will have a plan to move forward without an extensive test regiment. I have heard different theories about biopsy. Basically, with the size of mine, it needs to be remove regardless, so they are likely to go for that. The larger question is if they will use robot laproscopsy or open. I also don’t know if they will remove any or all of the kidney, and the non-descriptive lesions on my liver have not been addressed other than surveillance. I would rather go through one larger surgery than a few as the issues become more pressing.
Thank you all again- I hope and pray that your journey through this process goes as well as possible.
@adreddick, I can imagine that you feel like a ticking time bomb having to wait for the next scan.
Have you already been diagnosed with kidney cancer and now further lesions have been found on your liver? Have you had treatment for kidney cancer?
