Improving neuropathy without spending a fortune - What actually helps?

Posted by lorciolfi @lorciolfi, Mar 19 6:15pm

I’ve spent a ton of money trying to get rid of or easing my neuropathy with no results. Has anyone had any luck with this?

What have you tried so far and where do you have it? How long have you had it?

My neuropathy has definitely improved, a lot. I have done many things, so I can't say specifically which one(s) are helping. First thing, low carb/low sugar diet which is basically Paleo. No wheat ever. Beyond that, walking every day for at least half an hour and taking some supplements: Biotin and R-ALA. Also using stress reduction such as prayer and meditation. If I had to pick one thing, I think the most important one of all is probably the low carb/low sugar diet, along with basically Paleo foods, avoiding processed foods, and trying to eat as much organic as possible. I also have a green smoothie for breakfast every day along the lines of what Mindy Pelz recommends.

accupuncture helped with the pain but not the numbness (I did it for about 6 months). I no longer have pain. Barefoot shoes (also called minimalist or zero drop) have helped with the numbness, sensitivity and balance. Magnesium cream mixed with a little castor oil also helped a bit. I do still have some numbness and occasional burning.

Have you tried taking Cymbalta/duloxetine for nerve pain? Have you been on gabapentin or Lyrica?

Which supplements have you tried? Alpha Lipoic acid, Acetyl l carnitine and magnesium have helped me with my neuropathy.

Have you had recent blood work to check vitamin/mineral deficiencies or toxicities? This can worsen neuropathy symptoms.

Are you still getting chemo treatments?

Have you tried prescription medication like Cymbalta/duloxetine and Gabapentin or Lyrica?

Are you working with a pain management specialist and/or neurologist to treat your neuropathy?

You may need to consider nerve ablation, pain pump or stimulator depending on which nerves are damaged.

Have you had an EMG/nerve conduction study, small fiber neuropathy skin punch biopsy, and myelogram? Do you know which nerves have been damaged?
