How soon does the immune system recover after chemo?

Posted by srobinet @srobinet, Feb 1 5:44pm

I was recently diagnosed a few weeks ago IDC. I have a cruise scheduled for early September of Star of the Seas which has approximately 6500 cruisers/staff. My sister thinks I need to cancel or reschedule the cruise. My surgery will probably not be until the end of February. I'm not sure how long they wait before starting chemo. The chemo will be 12 weeks. I am leaning toward a BM since my cancer is a grade 3 and a more aggressive type.

It depends on your oncology team.
I had stage 1 breast cancer, surgery first, 4 weeks later started 12 weeks for chemo (4 treatments) however waited 1 yrs to start 2nd treatment, Tamoxifen. Recovering from chemo takes time and varies between men and women.
I had severe muscle loss and no stamina, which took 1 yr to recover using a personal trainer.

If you can go on the cruise before chemo, ask your oncology team. My team at Mayo is awesome.

Thank you for your thoughts. I will not be able to adjust my cruise date to an earlier time due to financial reasons. I'm hoping I will be able to go. I did purchase the trip insurance back in November when this cruise was booked. I found out about my cancer several weeks ago.

@srobinet :

I am so sorry for what you've been through lately:(

It must have been such a disappointment to find out the cancer diagnosis after you purchased the trip ticket and have been excited with the anticipation of the upcoming cruise! Please check with your care team first to find out how the cruise in September would fit best with your upcoming treatment plan to conquer the disease cancer. Surely these professional medical experts will give you the best advice under the circumstances.

My thoughts and prayers are with you for a better journey ahead!

A lot may depend on the chemo they use. I was diagnosed April 2023, surgery June 5th. Oncotype positive so 4 rounds of chemo July to October (yes, that quickly), then 4 weeks of radiation. While there were side effects, I did recover from the worst of them quickly but the residual, for me, has taken a long time. Hair started to regrow in about 6 weeks, fatigue is still present (but also currently on ai therapy which compounds that), did get neuropathy which went away for the most part with therapy only to return with the ai meds. Not enough to cause major problems for me. My primary is that white count, particularly lymphocytes, has never fully recovered so I am still considered immunocompromised. While I recognize it’s there, I don’t do anything special. I know it’s risky and should consider masking in large groups etc but so far haven’t had any major problems or illnesses from exposure.
So definitely talk to your team for their input, but with surgery in Feb, chemo to follow, hopefully you’ll be done early enough to recover and you can still have a nice cruise.

Hi!
I had cancer in 1998 DCIS right breast. Treated with lumpectomy and radiation and I was off and running. Radiation was extremely difficult for me. but, I have been told that is much better than that time.
Second time, DCI same breast but invasive this time. In weird spot resting on lower inside of right breast STage one, but Grade 3.. Score 28. Finished 12 weeks of chemo therapy and infection shots. Mastectomy of right breast and starting to do reconstruction of right breast with expander already in and expanding breast skin damaged from first radiation experience. Tissue looks good.
I was allergic to the chemo and went into anaphylactic shock, first time round of chemo. Did benadryl and steroids to survive that. We adjusted drip time of chemo and benadryl each time. That was huge improvement!!
hated the shot!!! Every time extreme jaw pain 10 out of 10 ended up in emergency room. Before all this started walking with my dog 2 to 3 miles per day and going to the gym 2 times week. I am seventy-three. My question is I don't want any of the medicine therapies that the oncology team is talking about, because it throws you back into menopause, been there done that!! What are tried and true recovery techniques to build muscles, bones, kidney, and liver functions so I can go back the the pre cancer routine.
