I'm not recovering: Could meds be causing suicidal thoughts?

Posted by autumn2025 @autumn2025, May 17 10:57pm

I feel depleted. In my past, I was motivated in trying anything to get better from a deep depression and intense anxiety. Years have gone by... it seems that I feel pretty low at the beginning of the day, and feel even lower by the end of the day. Suicidal thoughts have been present for the past week. I feel useless, replaceable, and very emotional. I have been retrying lamictal and am on the 4th week (50 mg). I see that it can increase suicidal thoughts in some people. How do I know if it's the medication causing them or that my depression has just gotten worse over time?

By the way, I meant to write "look for the good - not "look for the food!" Hahaha. Good food is a plus though too. 😏

If you have not seen a neurologist do so immediately.

All “mental” health originates in the brain. What ever one calls it, the brain is the locus.

All treatment from counseling, which works, and medications that don’t, target the brains ability to adapt and heal.

It starts and ends in the brain.

Trauma can be physically or experimentally inflicted. This covers both genetic or inherent trauma as well as environmental trauma, our lived experience if you will.

When we experience any feeling it is a manifestation of brains function. This is science not voodoo.

If you can not control your racing thoughts you may need to go to an emergency room as much as I hesitate to recommend that.

For me I try to meditate, exercise or simply sit and cry. It is work I know and I am sorry you are suffering so.

Find some professional that will listen and know you are not alone…I know it feels that way; it does for me most of the time as well.

That said lack of understanding doesn’t mean lack of love. You are loved!

Of that I am sure.

I agree. It is science, but it is so much more as well. I refuse to believe this is all there is. I hope they do come up with a cure for mental illness and dementia. It's possible.

Thanks Autumn. It runs on my Mom's side of the family, too. I lost my Grandpa, my uncle, and my cousin is 2 years older than me and in end stage. It takes a toll, but everyone goes through something, don't they?

I have no hate mail. I'm surprised. I hope you understand that what I wrote last night was from the heart. I really want the best for you, and I know I got a bit deep. Pain pills do that, and I was exhausted, but I wanted to give you the best response I could at the moment. I hope you weren't offended. On a lighter note, my niece is visiting today, so I have to keep this short. May you find something funny today and laugh until your sides hurt. 😄💗

Thank you. I wasn't offended. Have a good day!

Our physiology gives rise to our consciousness.

Our consciousness shapes our environment.

Our environment (writ large) shapes our physiology.

The most important feedback loop in the universe.

Body, Mind, Spirt and Environment…what I call the Four Pillars of Alignment must all be nurtured for me to Thrive.

This is the only path to peace I’ve found.

Peace and good health to all.

What a great bit of information, and good for you! I'm doing the same thing. I won't take anymore psych meds. I think they caused more harm to my body than good. For me, getting outside, exercise, painting, music, God, laughter, and love are essential to healing. I also went through repeated trauma and life has felt like a war, but dumping medication into my body wasn't the answer. I'm so glad you're doing better. Your term, "cognitive blunting" is so spot on. I could relate to that immediately. I hated that feeling. Glad you're doing well. 🩷

The suicidal thoughts have disappeared with an intense headache. So, hopefully, I'll get reprieve from the suicidal thoughts for a bit of time.

I appreciate you sharing your experiences. These decisions of the lives that are affected do cause me a lot of concern. My kids are the biggest reason as to why I continue on. They are such great kids! I just don't want my deep depression to negatively impact their lives.

Dear DfB
A Question, like you, I had & still have severe allergic effects from taking Anti-Depressants. Risperidone, Quietiapine, Effexor. None did what they were supposed to do and I was Hospitalized due to adverse drug reaction issues. I am Autistic ("hi-performing"). After a 3 yr Physician monitored titration off of Effexor, I am still getting legacy side effects (swollen face & rashes). You say you rebounded & recovered quickly. Clearly AD's can have a poisoness effect on the Body & central nervous system with very drug sensitive people. Now 2 yrs post finishing titration. But still getting legacy allergic effects. Do you still have any legacy adverse effects and how long did your Dr's say they will last? I have read an average of 4 yrs , after stopping taking AD Pills, can go on before you are clear of the drug effects.

When I stopped taking my antidepressant combo, it was my 4th time taking it. Even though I told my psychiatrist that it was ineffective when I retried it the 2nd time. I think the psychiatrists had me trying and retrying them because they didn't know what else to put me on. I have no residual effects. I went off because my psychiatrist dropped me and the meds were completely not working. There was no change from taking them to not taking them.

Thanks for your reply. It seems that lasting, Severe legacy effects are @ the rare end of AD drug treatment Patient experience . Like you, they, (AD's), had no prescribed for positive effect and in my Case just made me immediately ill, only after 2x Pills of each type.
Also as with you. My Dr just tried one Pill after another .

When I took those medications for insomnia I found them to cause me to have suicidal thoughts. The Dr's want you think it's from you not the medication. The medication makes you sicker in some cases.
