I'm frightened, my GFR dropped from 48 to 34.

Hello,
I'm back but not with good news. My GFR has dropped from 48 to 34 which is not good at all. Does anyone have any reason for this? Could I have been dehydrated the day of the test??? Another number is high, cis something. Quite high. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if this is just my body. I am seeing my nephrologist the in 3 days. HELP!

@doug19 It's interesting that she said to "drink when thirsty" The experts I have read said by the time you are feeling thirsty, you are well on your way to being dehydrated! Not good on your remaining kidney nor your body in general, in my humble opinion.

Being hydrated is critical to our body, and all the systems we have to hold together. Now I am on a new dialysis protocol, I am drinking more good fluids each day, and it has paid off. While I love my crushed ice-and-water first thing in the morning, it is a welcome drink all day long. Sometimes I add a packet of Taste of Lemon or Lime or Orange. But rarely do I go for a sugar-free drink additive. If I have been outside working, I might slug down a 12 oz. Gatorade to rehydrate before taking a short rest.

Good for you, do your best, not worry too much. Be gentle on yourself!

Ginger, do you suggest Gatorade as an add on alternative to plain water? My friend said that to me but I really have not had much of that product. Just curious.

@nscappa I don't drink Gatorade very often, truthfully. The ingredients are not renal diet friendly. But if I have been sweating a lot and feel overheated, it works to have a small 12 oz bottle of Gatorade Zero to replenish some electrolytes. It eases my mind enough and rests me to get back to water.

It has taken me many years to recognize the subtle signs between thirst and dehydration for me.

Hi Doug,
I feel the same way as you do re doctors' appointments and the results of that appt. Now, as far as drink when you are thirsty does not sound like good advice if you have CKD period. I mean, 90 oz. doses sound like a lot but as long as it's periodically I guess it's okay. I just read that another of us drinks about 125 oz. a day but no all at one time, throughout the day. I just had my appointment with my nephrologist, and I was truthful re not taking in enough water so I have been upping my water to almost 60 oz. a day, possibly more if it's another fluid. I never even knew that I had kidney disease until I read it on my after summary and my G.P. (even though I really loved her) never told me. I probably had it for a couple of years (guessing) not never knew. Eventually I decided to seek out a nephrologist (whom I just love) and I was so happy to hear just what and where I stood in my CKD levels. He told me that he didn't need to see me for a year. Wow, that was great news. I'm no dietitian I go by what I know and I'm always looking for new foods that I can eat and what not to. Well, take care and I hope my post helps you in some way. Take good care. : )

The amount of water consumption depends on your body weight. I think it is at least half your body weight. So it can vary from a 120# vs a 250# person Iwas recently advised to get Ultima Replenisher electrolyte packets. I just started using them two days ago and feel better and it tastes good. It has Stevia in it and is too sweet for me in 16 oz so I put it in 24 oz container.

It’s not 8 glasses a day anymore. Here’s how much water you should drink each day

This is an article that was just published in Forbes and I think It should be required reading for anybody that is concerned whether they are drinking enough water or how to ramp up to drink more if you do not. It basically says that women should drink 90 ounces of water a day and men should drink 120 ounces. Of course there Are many factors in play, your environment, your activity level, your body size and the condition of your kidneys just to name a few. I could not figure out a way to put a link directly to this article, but I think if you look it up using the authors name and date, you should be able to find it
