Ibuprofen and a J-pouch

Posted by phannenstiel @phannenstiel, 3 days ago

Has anyone been told not to take Ibuprofen with a J-Pouch? At my last Pouch scope, I was told to avoid ibuprofen completely and use Tylenol instead. Historically, I don't use ibuprofen regularly, but I do use it for typical aches and pains on occasion. I know that it can cause digestive issues for some, but I'm wondering what the guidance is for this. I am traveling right now and have developed some flu-like symptoms and feeling achy (Covid-19 was negative). This would be one of those times!

I was told not to take NSAIDs when I had my JPouch done at Cleveland Clinic as well as when I had my ileostomy done at Mayo AZ - due to fact that NSAIDs cause bleeding issues. I have not taken anything but Tylenol.

Hi @phannenstiel !

NSAIDS are not recommended if you have a history of Crohn's Disease or Ulcerative Colitis. NSAIDS can irritate intestinal mucosa, prolonged use can be damaging. I asked my GI about it and his guidance is using them occasionally is okay. Occasionally being once a month or so.

Since you were told to avoid it after your last scope, you should probably avoid it.

Tylenol (acetaminophen) can be effective for flu like symptoms, and, while it isn't an antiinflammatory, it will reduce fever and help with achiness and pain. If you're taking a cold medication, most of them have Tylenol already, so read the labels!
