How do you manage daily life with IBS-D?

Posted by pjss48 @pjss48, Dec 11, 2018

I have IBS with diarrhea. I'm taking med for it. Had several bowel movements already today. How do you get things done in house and go out on errands and going to Dr appointments? Driving me crazy!

Again I was saved by taking cholestyramine powder [Quesran] 2X per day. But only for D. If constipated as well at times, avoid it.

I too have been saved by taking cholestyramine powder once a day.
Hyoscyamine ER 0.375 mg-twice a day. However, I still have diarrhea on some days Just not as often.

Hi, @dboesten - having watery diarrhea for 11 years sounds really tough for your husband. Is he considered to have IBS-D at this time?

@lisalucier I’ve had IBS for many years but hadn’t heard of IBS-D? So can you tell me about it? How it differs from IBS? Ty

@surechamp ibs-d is diarrhea. There are three types, C with is constipation, and M which is mixed, a little of both.

Thanks for your reply & clarification. I have both & have had for over 20 years & has worsened over the years with aging.

How long has this been going on? Has something in your life changed? New meds or supplements?

@surechamp
I have had what I characterize as IBS since I contracted Covid in October 2023. It never disappeared. I took the covid cure pills (Paxlovid) which introduced diarrhea through out the day. Now have passage every time I eat, an hour later. Can't keep anything in. doctors tried many tests, are mystified; want me to repeat colonoscopy (the remedy for everything from the common cold on up) which will likely be normal.

Am now on my second Gastroenterologist. No clue as to what is causing this. Just keep on doing tests, and them maybe drink sandy milkshakes, and take a series of prescription drugs (Arrgh!)

At this point, I am reconciles for the moment to just deal with it. Thankfully, I can eat anything I want...

I’ve been to many gastro dr’s over the years & have had many colonoscopies & have been treated like one size fits all & couldn’t be anymore untrue as each case is different. Bottom line is there’s no cure for IBS! When I think I have condition figured out with what I can eat, meds etc condition changes & I’m back to square one Ugh!!! Don’t mean to have you lose hope with what I’m saying but just to let you know history of my journey with IBS. I wish you well.
