I read what I write but CANNOT read a written book!

Posted by xpax @xpax, Jan 11 1:35pm

Thanks for tuning in.
This is very serious.
I can read pages and pages of what I have written, yet have to put down absolutely any book I read after maybe two pages.

Please, I used to read like a sponge, but now cannot tolerate reading anymore.
Help, advice, suggestions ❤️ please !!!

Hello . I honestly can't remember. I think I might have asked because I was wondering if others near my age. 77 were having a similar non reading period in later life.

@gravity3 I was a voracious reader from childhood (always had a book in my hand!) till my fifties, I think … then in the next few years read less and less. Now I can’t remember when I last read a book!

I do believe devices are the reason so many of us have stopped reading books. I have even lost the art of letter writing because it is easier to type out an email or send an attachment with the tap of one finger!

Respectfully, it seems that the subject matter of any book you read is of no consequence. Rather it is the physical “book” that is so trying. Tell us please. With what topics do some of your writings deal? Many of a few? Do you enjoy reading your writings in part due to the physical effort you afforded it? Can you name an American writer whose book you could tolerate? If any, what uncomfortable sensations do you experience when turning to page 3? Self-doubt that you could make it to, say, page 211, the end of the book? And your most interesting post caused me to think you frantic about not reaching page 3. What is the worst thing that could happen stopping at 2? Generally do you complete tasks or projects that you begin? In a similar post, you stated that you either stopped reading or stopped reading books a “couple of years ago”. Forgive for not recalling your exact words. Did something traumatic or exciting or fulfilling, etc., occur concurrently in your life? Could you ever write a book? How long are your writings, which apparently pass muster for readability? Unrelated probably, and not knowing your age, would you have been able to view the entire 1997 Romance “Titanic”, 3:15 hours? I believe your other post mentioned partial inability to remember or be able to recount to someone what you had read moments ago. Could you recount at least the essence of Titanic, for instance, the day after seeing it? Few people think about throw-away particulars of a film, I believe, unless vital to the plot. Could the spoken State of the Union Address - were it of more than mere interest - keep you “glued”. Could you comment on its kernel or gist, if called upon? Or would it be merely an audiobook? We’re not really talking about books here, are we? Which usually tend to take longer to read, follow and digest than The Pledge of Allegiance. Does you - not “condition” - rather “preference” for other indulgences bestow on you some sort of stigma in you mind? I was a college librarian for 36 years, in California. I’m pretty sure that I read two books during that career. One was Son of the Morning Star by Evan S. Connell, 1985. And the other one wasn’t. For one thing I was working; such as gently explaining to an entering student why ROSETTA STONE was not an influential Latina about whom to write a biography.

Anyway, Sir, I am vastly interested in what you have graciously shared. To read replies or observations from you would be a great pleasure.

PS: Several Western Native American tribes referred to G. A. Custer as the Son of the Morning Star.

Hi, losing interest in activities you used to enjoy could be depression. Is it because you get bored? Can’t see it? Cannot comprehend what it is saying? Have you been through a major life event since this has started to occur? Over 90% of a person’s difficulties, are related to some kind of stressor. Not saying you do, but anxiety can cause the weirdest things happen that in no way one could relate to anything mental; But yes, it is.

I have always read a lot but now there is so much going on, I have a hard time reading anything if it’s not to benefit myself or kids. I don’t joy read anymore. Just some thoughts

@rashida thank you very much. im at a life changing time right now. We just had our divorce trial last week. The person that said money won’t make you happier is nuts lol. God always provides but money is certainly a necessity.

@arbreeze what you are going through is a major stressor. I hope and pray that you will come through this ordeal all the stronger.

Yes, money is a necessity but that too God can and will provide, if you let Him lead you. You may not come out with as much as you want, but He will provide you with enough.

I came across a quote that has helped me:

“If God sends us on stony paths, He will provide us with strong shoes.” - Alexander MacLaren

@gingerw
thank you
When I read the books were devoured even well remembered.
For extremely high stresses these last 10 years could that have caused reading and hearing incomprehension?
Comprehension does seem to be inhibited with both audio and visual linguistic input. Tragic, I pray this is curable ! I do thank you for seeing this.

@xpax I think you nailed it. COMPREHENSION, you said. You barely understand a word you’re reading, so naturally have lost interest. Please get checked out by a Neurologist.

Consider too copying in your own handwriting a book, than read what you have written. It’s worth a try. You’ve been given many suggestions and been asked questions on this forum. But never reply back with answers. You just keep posting the same two interesting yet nebulous statements. I think either you don’t care what others have to say (write) or this is a put on.

I am very similar that way. I was a bookworm when I was a kid. Now I struggle with reading. I feel anxious when I read. Like an anxiety attack. I struggle at work as they require continuing learning. I sometimes have to get up and walk away. If the classes ( on the computer ) have some
audio it helps. Small print really stresses me. I can see it fine, but the small tightness gets me. I have always thought I was alone with this. And yes my comprehension on subjects that are boring really suffer.
Boring is part of it. I bought a children's book and read it occasionally (same book). It makes me smile. Have no problem reading it. Maybe I'm regressing. 😀
