I read what I write but CANNOT read a written book!

Thanks for tuning in.
This is very serious.
I can read pages and pages of what I have written, yet have to put down absolutely any book I read after maybe two pages.

Please, I used to read like a sponge, but now cannot tolerate reading anymore.
Help, advice, suggestions ❤️ please !!!

@xpax Hello!

May I suggest trying an audiocassette. I have just recently really enjoyed book reads. Hope something clicks for you.

Hi.
Do you think that years of exposure to reading short, easy bits like this on a screen has lowered many people's overall attention span for reading?

@xpax Do you think being able to read what you write yourself is a result of your brain already having processed the idea and words? That way, it is nothing new. Reading a book you are exposing yourself to different ideas/words/ sentence structure. It might be a big undertaking, an attention issue, a stumbling block as it were. How does this resonate with you?

Could you slow down your reading speed? Try and pick up to read what interests you at that moment? Be sure you are able to take frequent breaks. Do not add in distractions like eating, or watching television, or even laying in bed. Do any of these sound like they might be worth a try? You could be doing it all without being aware. I am guilty of that, myself!

@xpax Possibly, but attention span can vary given so many factors.
-Is there a real interest in reading what is in front of you, or is it a task you need to do?
-Is the environment you find yourself in conducive to reading and paying attention to what your eyes are reading? Perhaps environmental noise, or a crowd, or location you're at are not "right" for paying attention?

@xpax I do believe so - in my case, at least …

@xpax
For me, having wearing reader glasses and producing proper light helps me to absorb the words on the page of the book.

@xpax you are not alone. I am also like you! I can’t remember when I picked up a book to read, although some years ago I was a voracious reader and always had a book in my hands, even as a child! I suspect technology has made us distracted … it has become easier to watch and read off a screen than off pages of a book.

Me too. Used to have 3-5 books going at once. Not interested since about 7 years ago. I am 77. I have come to the conclusion that it is because...as I see I....there are no new stories. And I am sick to death of the usual human stories. That goes for anything that is story....t.v., movies etc.

Hello . I honestly can't remember. I think I might have asked because I was wondering if others near my age. 77 were having a similar non reading period in later life.

Same here. I blame it on mediocre writers 😁. Kidding aside, I still enjoy books by Richard Russo (the Old Cape Magic) and Haruki Murakami (Men Without Women, Drive My Car is a short story in this book), but not much else. I’ll try Archie comic books. Thanks Scott!
