I have had a scab in my left nostril for years.

I have had a scab in my left nostril for years. When the scab comes out there is bright red blood that I dab a few times and it stops. I had seen online someplace cases of numbers of people all with the same affliction. They said that the scab was some form of an infection and they had received many suggestions from doctors about just leaving the scab alone so it won't bleed or giving them medications that do not work or cause the person unpleasant side effects. Mind you, this is not BSC but some thing that fastened onto the cartilage of the nose and is a hard thing to eradicate. I tried Essential oils and used Tea Tree Oil and also Cleavers which I put on a cotton ball and put it in on my nose cartilage for an hour. Cleavers does not have a pleasant smell refreshing as do my other oils and it is a dark color but it is supposed to do the trick. Cleavers did help and the scab in smaller and does not clog the nose as some people complained of. I know it is something requiring an antibiotic to cure. It is some form of herpes simplex I feel. I know "bugs" of that sort love the lining of the nose and that there are many blood vessels ready to bleed if disturbed by this whatever it is called. I would love anyone's input who has encountered the same thing.
Thank you people.

I am a healthy ninety except for ankylosing spondylitis and wet macular

@jantinesco Talk to your surgeon to find out what they did. After I had my blood vessel cauterized I get scabs in nose Dr told me to put Vaseline in nostrils

Thank you for your reply. I doubt I will be able to speak to my surgeon until my follow up appointment in 3/4 weeks time. I had the ulcer cauterized about nine months ago but it didn't make any difference. I had to sign a form to agree to a skin graft from "animal skin" which I did, as I just wanted to get the procedure over and done with.

I have it in both of my nostril and they do block my nose, I have to try and open up so I can breath. Then my nose starts to bleed and it is really hard to stop and by the time it stops they are blocked back up right away it is a nightmare and it is 24-24. Doctors don't have a clue. The funny thing is my nose is always dripping not just blood but nasel fluid also sorry for the spelling. If anyone finds out anything please let me know. Thanks

I have the exact same problem although my bleeding isn't as much as yours sounds,I am a bit naughty tho and can't seem to help myself to pick at my scabs they are so very big and annoying I can barely breathe at times which temps me to pick ,also does anyone else notice the dried mucus/scabs are a bit smelly? I actually have made my nostril split at the front tip of my nose due to exsesive picking 😕 about 4 years ago I went to stay with my mother for a few months and she got a small pimple like thing in her nostril it's flared up and can't recall exactly what the doctors said it was but they gave her antibiotics and in only a few days was all cleared up,I went back home oblivious to the fact it could affect me then after a few days I got a big sized pimple like lump in one nostril and also flared up badly in both nostrils worse than my mum's did I get very very bad scabs now I have had a course of antibiotics and that didn't work although only seen 1 doctor that all she could tell me it was a infection so a course of antibiotics should do the trick she was wrong, from what I have gathered alot of you that have written in have similar problem no diagnosis, what is going on with us all ☺️ anyway anyone have any suggestions as to what this horrible painful, annoying scabbing is? Help someone......thankyou.

I am having the same problem! It is absolutely terrible! I suspect that my allergy medication may be a contributing factor. Do you take allergy meds or decongestants?

This may help, let me share. I use, and read to use Rosewater and glycerin. The first time I used it, it realieved my dry nosel immediately, and I haven't had the problem since. Make sure its not just rosewater, and glycerin is on the lable too. Health stores have it. Like natural food stores.

Try Rosewater and glycerin. It works.

@pattmontez Where do you get this at and is it mixed or separate that you buy?

I get it from Natural food store that used to be vitamin cottage. And it is mixed together. Make sure it isn't just rosewater. And that the glycerin is on the bottle, also.

Hi, @sunriseboy, and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Are you seeing a regular scab in your nostril, as well? If so, is the lavender oil healing it, or having a soothing effect?

I'm a 39yr old male. I've been struggling with the scab in the right nostril for at least a year. That same area began about 3 years ago with nosebleeds. The nosebloods stopped after I quit messing with the area. I've struggled with joint pain in my right hip since I was 27. And both shoulders around age 37. Both happened during an event (stretching legs, doing pushups) and haven't healed since. I also noticed Wegener’s/GPA includes both joint pain and nose scabs. The scab doesn't really hurt, even if I remove it. Though the area is sensitive to air after removing the scab (which quickly reforms..probably overnight). The area surrounding the scab is red and inflamed, not pink like the left nostril.

I've seen 2 doctors. I just visited an ENT. He cauterized a blood vessel in my nose. I've been having headaches for a long time and I suspect they are caused by the goings on in my nose. It's been a day since I was cauterized and I feel like the headache has been relieved...at least in this short term.

The ENT informed me I have a deviated septum. The scab forms in the nostril w/ good air flow. I'm using AYR saline and gel throughout the day. I also started running a humidifier at night. And breathe right strips at bedtime. I have a prescription (don't know the medication names yet) that should be ready today too.

I'm going back to the ENT in 2 weeks to see if the area has finally healed. If not then it's probably going to be a biopsy and/or camera in the nose.
