I have developed a gastritis after my bout of PMR and treatments. Gastroenterologist started me on Famotidine 40mg. This is OTC for the 20mg dosage. I try to take it as needed but it works better to just take every day. I found I am able to take just the one 40mg tablet daily with reasonable success. I think the prescription says up to 4 tablets daily. I have not seen any side effects at the lower dosage.
Thank you, really appreciate your reply. I will ask my doctor.
Prilosec is OTC
I take an Rx of Pantosaprol 2 x day.
Gaviscon Extra Strength (OTC) is what I use if I have breakthrough reflux. I also take Protonix 20 mg. Blessings....
It sounds to me your doctor told you to go over the counter.
Check out Organic grocery stores that also sell vitamins. They may have a suggestion of something that’s not so strong. That is what I did many years ago and the one they told me to try worked. Just a suggestion
Actually my doc told
Me not to take any strong prescription or OTC heart burn med due to my autoimmune gastritis. He mentioned the safest is tums.
Consider talking with the pharmacist about potential drug interactions with any RX’s and OTC meds.
I use domperidone, Previcid, Gaviscone, tums. Am completely comfortable most of the time.
Autoimmune Gastritis is not the same as chronic gastritis or GERD . Who is the Doctor that is going to treat you for autoimmune gastritis. That is the person you should listen to.
Have you read up about autoimmune gastritis and how it is different than Chronic Gastritis?
We tend to take way more of these kind of drugs and for longer periods of time than we should . They effect how we absorb the nutrients in our food. A drug like Prevacid serves a purpose , say for Ulcers, but it is not supposed to be used long term. Yet people do decide to take them long term for something like GERD.
Ranitidine is much safer than the OTC PPI class of drug like Prilosec, Nexium or Prevacid for long term use. Note that once you start on a daily regiment of these kind of drugs, when you try to get off of them, you may have rebound symptoms.
But having said that, I'm not sure anyone should be taking either of these long term, unless the Doctor who is treating you for Autoimmune Gastritis advises you to do that.
One thing that did help me for my chronic Gastritis was to use DGL Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice Root Extract capsules 2 about 15 minutes before each meal. But I no longer can take it because I am now on a small daily dose of prednisone. So, I think it should be run by a pharmacist who has a list of your currant medications to make sure it would be safe to take it.
I take the prescription Voquenza. It's relatively new and supposed to be better that the others, but I do from time to time still get heartburn.
