I have a friend who broke out in a terrible rash from a high dose of a statin, He had a biopsy and it was from a drug reaction. He is off the statin for now and using different prescriptions. Suggest you visit a dermatologist.

@lbabb Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! Having a reaction to medications like this can be frustrating not to mention painful. While you don't mention what the prescription is, have you looked up the side effects? I wonder if reducing the dosage with your doctor's permission, will ease what you are experiencing? Perhaps there is another medication that can be substituted that will have the same proposed beneficial effects. At the very least, contact your prescribing medical person to let them know. Don't just stop take the medicine!

To ease the itch, have you tried an aloe vera ointment to soothe your symptoms?

There are different types of drug eruptions and varying degrees of severity with certain drugs involved more frequently. Dermatologists have the most experience in diagnosing and treatment if you have access for a visit. They usually have dealt with the common offenders and other possible disorders.

This happened to me in 2017 from having used the medication Plaquenil for just 6 days. I developed a terrible rash with red welts all over my body including scalp, except for lower legs. The doctor was in denial and told me to keep using it into the 2nd week. As it became worse, my husband took me to the ER where I was admitted for 5 days! Once the steroids took control of the situation the rash gradually lessened however left me with the healing process which took months. The marks gradually went away after becoming a brownish color. They said I was border Stevens-Johnson. Loosing a lot of hair was quite traumatic after being so sick for a period of time. It compromised my immune system and I now am left with severe allergies. Be sure to get yourself to a doctor.

I get a lot of reactions to meds. Most are short termed. Put cortizone on rash for 3 days. Ice packs when it gets really bad. If it doesn't help in 3 days or you get other symptoms , call your dr. asap.
