I cannot find a psychologist

Posted by sharona09 @sharona09, 1 day ago

I have tried for over a year to find a psychologist and can't get in anywhere! Everyone has a waiting list. I did find one guy a few years ago during COVID, and I was wearing a mask. The first thing out of the Psychiatrist's mouth was, "That mask will not do you any good." I felt betrayed by my comfort zone. I should have reported the guy. How can one find help these days when everyone is busy? Not to mention, a good fit is so important.

Can you give your city/state? What is your age (Medicare)?

If you are on Medicare they can really help find a psychologist in your area that takes Medicare.

If you can give your address maybe a monitor can give you information on web sites or where to search for psychiatric support in your area.

@sharona09 Are you looking for a psychologist (Ph.D. or Psy.D) who will meet with you on a regular basis for psychotherapy? Or are you looking for a psychiatrist (MD) who will meet with you to prescribe and adjust your mental health medications?

I live in a rural region of Michigan and while the number of mental health providers (mostly social workers) has increased their practices are usually full. I suggest that you use all your resources and keep trying.

Here is one website that lists both psychologists and psychiatrists. Not everyone in your area will be listed here as the mental health providers choose to participate in this website:

Psychology Today: Find a Therapist

You can also search for a psychologist who is listed in your state or province's psychological association.

Here is the national listing for psychologists:

American Psychiatry Association: Psychiatrist Locator

My adult son lost his job because of his mental illness symptoms showed up. So, he lost his health insurance.
He couldn't go any psychiatrist. Later he got a government insurance for low income ( no income ) people. But no psychiatrist accepted because his poor insurance. We called many psychiatrists to make an appointment for him. When he was a young, our insurance covered him so we could meet a nice psychiatrist. Our son really needed doctor's help when he lost his job. But his office turned him down. We wanted to talk to the doctor.
One of our rich elder neighbors lost her husband recently and she was sad , she can't stand her sadness then she often visits psychiatrists to just talk to the doctor get comfort. She has a nice insurance. My husband and I often get emails from our hospital to visit anytime to meet your doctors including psychiatrists. We are healthy we don't need it. Those mental illness people tend to lose their job and lose their insurance. They can't go to the doctor and get worse or go drug. Those street drug makes them nicer feeling temporarily. This is very sad situation.

I meant that healthy people usually have nice job and have nice insurance . Those people often get invitation emails from the doctor's office. for the just checking. We don't need to ask or call appointments. Doctor's office often calls us nicely to check our health, cancer checking ,,,etc.
But real sick people who really need doctor's help can't go to the doctor because they don't have nice insurance. They couldn't have it.

Thank you, just looking for therapy. I have tried Psychology Today and psychiatry.org, but I also live in a rural area, and only come up with a few. I prefer a female who reduces my options. I will keep trying.

@sharona09. Are you open to virtual visits by computer? If yes, then have another look at those websites and find out which providers are in your state. Only mental health providers who are licensed in your state are allowed virtual visits. And then, some insurance companies do limit virtual visits but the mental health provider will often know that ahead of time.

@sharona09. I think the member meant "mentor". That's me and many others on Mayo Clinic Connect. We are Volunteer Mentors. That doesn't have anything to do with Medicare.

I see a mentor caught my monitor mistake as I meant mentor. The mentors monitor discussions.

On Medicare. You can call or you can go online and do a search to see who takes Medicare.

Medicare does cover mental health counseling.
