Hypercalcuria and 24 hour urine prep
My endocrinologist has ordered a 24 hour urine for calcium, sodium, and creatinine. She wants me to refrain from all calcium supplements which I have done in previous collections but this time to stop for 10 days before as well as during the collection AND she wants me to limit my calcium consumption to just 600mg/day. Has anyone else had to reduce their calcium this much for 11 days for this test? I have been taking 12.5 mg of chlorthalidone for about 1 1/2 years. The only time my results were within normal range was 2 months after my first and so far only Reclast infusion (because it reduces your serum calcium thus lowering my output of calcium in my urine). So while taking chlorthalidone, my last 24 hour urine for calcium was 260 which is high but not terribly. Your input is appreciated. Thank you.

I’ve done this test twice and am getting ready to do it a third time starting tomorrow. I’ve never been told to reduce my calcium intake prior to the test. I do not take calcium supplements any more and typically get around 600 to 800 mg per day in my diet.
I am on hydrochlorothiazide as I have hypercalciuria.
I suspect your doctor wants to make sure that over supplementation with calcium is not giving a falsely high reading on your 24 hour calcium test.

4 Reactions@oopsiedaisy Thank you for your response. I have been consuming approximately 1200 mg of calcium with 400 mg with supplements and balance from diet. I'm beginning to think that I should be taking less calcium going forward like you do but will confirm with my doctor once the test results are in. Good to know someone is in the same corner as me. So frustrating.

1 ReactionYou might also check under the main heading Osteoporosis, then type calcium for subheadings. There are many.

1 Reaction@doglover1962 I did the same for several years until I found out I have hypercalciuria. My latest test will show whether going on hydrochlorothiazide and reducing my calcium intake has helped. I’m excited to see if it has.

1 Reaction@oopsiedaisy @doglover1962 When I did self-pay 24-hour urine calcium test the instructions were minimal. But I found the below doctor's instructions. It says to stop supplements, but I took that to mean that normal diet calcium was fine.
