Husband newly diagnosed

Posted by momshmallow @momshmallow, Jun 8 10:21pm

My husband is only 62 and was just diagnosed with Esophageal cancer. It sounds serious and I am very frightened. I want him to go to Boston which is only 35 minutes away where they appear to have a specialty group. How long can the wait be?

Be sure to monitor BP also. I had similar experiences while undergoing chemotherapy. I was blacking out because my blood pressure was dropping too low. Doc gave me some medicine to counteract that.

I had a similar experience. After my third chemo treatment, I woke up the next morning with BP in the 80s over 40s. In addition, my torso was flushed and I had a fever. In my case, I have alpha gal syndrome, allergy to mammal products from tick bites. After each treatment, they were "locking" the port, keeping it open, with 3 ml of heparin, which is made from pig intestines. I ended up in their hospital for three days. Whether it was the heparin or the drugs, we made a joint decision to discontinue, since the chemo was just an adjuvant (helper) to the proton therapy. This was at MD Anderson. I've also been through Mayo for lymphedema...

First treatment seemed to go very well. He was okay until tonight. Drove himself to the clinic to have the 46 hour pump removed and drove home.
Had some hydration while he was there as he still has difficulty with swallowing and it seems to perk him up.
But this evening around 9pm I was upstairs folding laundry and I heard a noise downstairs. My son and I ran down and found Rich on the kitchen floor.
He had taken the dogs outside then come back in to give them a treat. Said he felt weak and landed on the floor.
Spit up a little phlegm but managed to get himself up as he insisted he wanted to do it himself.
He made it to the couch, then had to go to the bathroom. He managed to climb upstairs and take care of himself then go back down to the couch.
He is resting now and says he just feels weak.
I called the on call doctor and we had a good discussion. She said to keep an eye on him for temperature change, vomiting, or diarrhea.
Ugh.

I’m glad he was able to start treatment. My husband just finished 4 rounds of FLOT chemo; it was really rough but he got through it. The reduced the last dosage by 15% because we didn’t feel his body could handle another dosage at 100% . They give a person as much as they feel can be tolerated and sometimes it becomes too much. The reduction helped as far as some of the worst of the side effects. We just met with the surgeon and are feeling a bit overwhelmed at the moment. I saw your post and wanted to check in and see how you guys were.

Hi I understand how scary EC diagnosis can be. I had it and went to Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa about 30 miles from where Charlotte and I live.
I ended up with 28 days of chemo and radiation which worked! The cancer was gone and I did not have to have surgery. I hope you find a great hospital in Boston. I found this list of hospitals in Boston:

Let us know how your treatment goes?

Hi! My husband was diagnosed the end of February. He had surgery on June 26th and released from the hospital on July 5th. He is doing great to where I think it has amazed the doctors. You can call me if you would like to talk. Inbox me if you want his number.

I’m sorry you’re going through EC with your husband. I went through surgery back in January myself. I had two surgeons it was a long surgery 9 hours. They removed 8cm of my esophagus and used my stomach to replace the part of esophagus they took out. Then I had 4 more chemo treatments 4 weeks post surgery. I am cancer free as of scan in June. I really did have great oncologist and surgeons also nurses. They made me feel complete confidence in them. I’m hopeful that your doctors give you the same confidence in them. Stay positive I believe it’s the best thing you can do for each other. Best wishes for you and your husband you got this!!

Thank you so much for checking in. I hope your husband is doing well. Monday my husband will have treatment number 2. He has gained 4 pounds in the last two weeks and he and the doctor seem very hopeful and pleased. I hope he can continue to tolerate the treatments for the full 3 months.
It is all quite a bit overwhelming. But I would tell you what I tell myself; one day at a time is all we should try to handle.
The universe will unfold as it should.
Hugs and hope!

I think of you and your husband often. That is awesome that he was able to gain weight during his treatment. Praying his next round goes well. My husband has stage 4 Ec and he starts treatments Tuesday.

Oh! I am so glad your husband will be starting soon. I was very frightened about the first treatment but it went very well. I wish the same for your husband. It does take a long time so be prepared for a long wait. I went home and waited for them to call me to go pick my husband up.
Sending you hope and hugs! XX

So glad to hear that he’s gained weight. Make sure you’re taking care of yourself also. This will impact you also. Stay positive and active also walks or whatever helps both of you. Depression can sneak its way in because of this horrible disease. No matter what fight! Like you said one day at a time. Always thinking of you both, wishing you the best keep up the good fight! Yes, depression is a sneaky beast, pops up at the most inopportune moments. I find list making, chores, cooking, and gardening are good for me to stay focused on the moment.
Also, I go in to work maybe 4 days a week. A routine is always good for me.
One day at a time is all I can handle right now so I stay in the moment.
Thank you for your support.
Getting encouragement from this group really helps. I always perk up when I see a new message.
Wishing you the best as well!
